I was sitting there the other day watching something on tv about a little known corner of our beautiful islands. Might have been Countryfile, or A Seaside Parish or whatever.....
.... then I had an idea for a little game. Imagine you were making a show like that about France. What are the places you'd include. Doesn't have to be France, could be Spain or Italy or somewhere else ....

I'd like to see a documentary about the heroes of the resistance who disrupted the nazis so bravely. I often spend time at the many memorials all across France pondering what they must have gone through.
If you haven't looked at the memorials in every town and village, I think it is something that you should do.

Oh I quite agree. We love looking at all those monuments and have seen quite a few stirring stories! Sometimes I don't think we quite 'get' how brave they were in horrible circumstances.
You find those memorials in some quite remote places and often no bigger than a simple plaque but they always have fresh flowers on them. They are never neglected.

History (and valour) do have a big place but I've got to say I was initially thinking more of the lovely places, flora and fauna etc...
We went to the Cevennes the year before last to see the Bearded Vultures they are gradually releasing into the wild in and arc from the Alps to the Pyrenees. They're fantastic birds, with a 7 metre wingspan. Well worth a look.
And the wild flamingos in the Camargue last year were quite something.
It led me to think that, while Coast has gone international (Australia this year, isn't it?) programmes like Countryfile haven't so much, and maybe we should give them a nudge.
Paradoxically, the places I like best tend to be those with the fewest tourist facilities and therefore the fewest tourists! I tend not to advertise these as I prefer to be the only tourist around
Parts of Greece, Hungary, Slovenia and FYRM come to mind.
Of the well known places ..... Ceret in Languedoc, many patches of Provence, the Puys ..... decisions, decisions ....
The Donana National Park in the far south west of Andalusia (Spain) is amazing - one of Europe's most important wetlands, which attracts thousands of migrating birds. It's also home to the rare Iberian lynx. There's even an excellent campsite on the edge of the park at El Rocio. The lagoon in front of the beautiful pilgrimage church there is full of flamingos and spoonbills.
We also love Los Barruecos, not far from Caceres in Extremadura - a surreal landscape of weird rocks and lakes, inhabited by numerous storks.

Wow, that sounds great, Iwalani! Just the kind of think I had in mind.
I've just been watching the Hairy Bikers in Sweden, up with the Sami people. Maybe there was a bit much cookery but the scenery and lifestyle up there looked lovely.
