We had a great time a couple of years ago in the Lake Konstanz/Berchtesgaden and Nuremburg areas, so we would like to visit Germany again this year (probably late May/early June).

We have a tent and would like recommendations for riverside sites with cycle paths into the town(s). A bit of history, some nice scenery, good food and drink, peaceful surroundings are also on our list of wants!

Can anyone help?

We too are going to Germany this year 26 May until 1st July. Our wish list is same as yours as we love to cycle. Because of the german school hols 28 May to 5th June we have decided to stay in France for that week then the plan is to go to black fores then Bodensee followed by Heidelberg and Mosel Valley. Dont intend to book anything but would be I interested to know where you stayed on the lake when you were there. Diphil has a lot of experience of Germany and I am sure she will be along soon to give you some recommendations. J x

In 2011 we stayed for a few nights at Campingplatz Genienau (Tripadvisor link), just South of Köln.

The campsite is separated from the Rhine by a hedge and trees, with convenient cycle access to the tarmac cycle path running along the Rhine - good flat cycling for miles in either direction. For more lumpy cycling, you can go up and down the valley sides!

The site is surrounded by fairly tall trees, so not very good for sunbathing, but we found it pleasant enough. We were there early in June and arrived in very muggy weather - we threw the tent up in double-quick time and just as the last peg went in a torrential downpour started, so we retreated to sit it out in the car.

I can recommend Camping Goldene Meile at Remagen, close to the famous bridge. Separated from the Rhine only by a boardwalk/cycling-path. Unfortunately only very few pitches with view on the river.
The town can be reached by foot in about 15 minutes. Next to the campsite there is a nice public open-air bath.
The Rhine and the trains on the opposite riverside can be noisy, but on most pitches this shouldn't be a problem.
The sanitaries are basic, but clean.
There are supermarkets with bakery near the campsite (10-15 minutes by foot).

Paul+Julie, we stayed at Fredreichshafen. Cycled into the town and got the lake boat over to Constance/Konstanz itself. A good base to see Meersburg and the rebuilt lake village from Neolithic times (can't remember the name but all the tourist offices will tell you about it).

I recommend Campingplatz Maaraue beside the Rhine in Mainz. Easy walk/cycle into Mainz (beautiful historic city) popular for cycling alondside the Rhine & Main.

We're planning to go through North Germany to Denmark and Sweden and we're tent campers too.

We're thinking hearty food, pretty villages, possibly a Dambusters reservoir on the way back.

Does anyone know any good sites on that route, please?

I can recommend Erden Campingplatz on the banks of the Mosel. Cycle track into Rachtig and we always go for the Zeltingen-Rachtig wine festival at the end of August. Great fun!

Have a look at the first site:
https://chriscaravanadventures.wordpress.com/germany-september-2010/

Now the second site, plenty of cycle tracks and both close to town and shops.

The school hols vary by state so you will need to know where you will be, but the info for all the German states is available by doing a 'Google'.

I've never had any difficulty finding a site, and I've never booked. They are sometimes a bit crowded in summer, but May / June you should be OK as summer hols don't start till mid July.

**** I've recently returned from Germany and stayed at 'Camping Berger' in Rodenkirchen (Cologne). good site right on the banks of the Rhine with easy commute into Cologne. ****

Whit Tuesday may be busy with many states being on holiday.
Until May 20th four or five German states will be on holiday (Bavaria, Baden-wuerttemberg, Hamburg, Berlin), after that until 28th it's only Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Camping An Der Friedensbrücke at Neckargemund just south of Heidelberg might suit. Neckargemund is only a short walk from the site and you can visit Heidelberg by bus, boat and train. The Neckar is one of the prettier rivers in Germany, a bit like the Thames. Another site on the Neckar we have stayed at is Camping Cimbria, at Neckarzimmern. Plenty of cycling opportunities and the bar sells Guinness!!!

Lizex, Glucksburg is a lovely town with a famous wasserschloss. It's near to Flensburg and the Danish border.
