Eating out? Try 'Le Tournepique' on the bridge at Castelnaud - good value meal and not pretentious. The cafe/restaurant over the road there is good too. Nice pizzeria in La Roque -'Chez Tom'.
Thanks Grahame, don't mind pretentious though. I'm a former chef (classically trained) and our friends venturing with us, one is a current head chef also classically trained. You can imagine the competitiveness in our rather well equipped kitchen set-up - not everyone's cuppa I know but we are looking forward to the Foie Gras. Going to try and give my buddy some time out of the kitchen and we do love eating out. Will have to be a bit selective what with two dogs and all! If anyone is in Le Capeyrou between 21st May and 1st June, do pop over for a canape or two or perhaps a glass of sherry; Cabanon Biscaya and a Palamos 6

IN that case you may prefer La Tonnelle in Beynac!
Can you stay on until mid August - we'll pop along the river path.
Nice recommendations, thank you! Alas, August is a "stay in the UK " month for us preferring adult only campsites in glorious Devon and Cornwall; usually a couple of long weekends. Not that we dislike kids it's just that our 4 are all grown up and spread across the globe either travelling or working, so enjoying our freedom at last! La Tonelle appears to have some excellent reviews - 6 weeks to the day and we will be checking in at Pompey for our overnight crossing to Le Havre. I'm like a kid at Christmas - cannot wait....
PS. Would have been delighted to welcome you for some nibbles and a glass or two

In at least 2 of the last 6 years it has been impossible to canoe the Dordogne or Vezere rivers even in June when we have been there as the attached photos show. Lets hope this year its better for you to get your canoeing in.
John
This was the Dordogne at Castelnaud in 2013 and as you can see the river was very high then
This was the Vezere at Montignac in June 2010
This was the municipal campsite at St Leon sur Vezere also in June 2010

Thanks John, looks like we'll need to buy some white river rafting kit! At least the sun is shining and it looks nice and warm?

John, which route do you take to the Dordogne? I can see you are in Ross so assume Portsmouth Le Havre/Caen is maybe your Channel crossing route? Contemplating fastest Paris-Orleans-Limoges or perhaps more interesting (stops etc) Le Mans-Tours-Poitiers. We are taking the "economie" service (Etretat) from Pompey to Le Havre (have two dogs and towing a trailer so this was the only reasonably priced option for us).

We do the Portsmouth to Caen ferry on a Sunday Morning which gets to Caen about 3.30pm French time. We then take the autoroute to Saumur passing Le Man for an overnight stop (love driving in France on a Sunday) which takes about 3 hours and €26 toll. We then do Saumur to Poitier and then Angouleme and Perigeaux and head towards Sarlat which takes about 5 hours but is toll free. Dual carriageway almost all the way from Poitier to Angouleme and rest of the trip is N roads but a lovely drive.
John
Ours gets in at 0800 on Saturday 21st. We are in a convoy as such and the plan is to hit Beynac-et-Cazenac as quickly as possible so perhaps the Orleans route would suit us better? We are not bothered about having to pay the tolls (we visit Spain a bit and wouldn't use anything else other than a toll now. We both have the tabs from ATMB to speed things up a little. Tours appears to be the half-way point so lunch stop would be nice their perhaps?
Having just looked at Google maps, its saying your route is faster today!
