we're looking for a campsite in massif central area of France that's within walking distance of a village so we can stroll into the village of an evening to have dinner etc. Any suggestions ?

Perhaps one of the campsites around Lac Chambon - there are several, of different sizes, different prices, and different styles. A lakeshore position is the most popular but the campsite nearest to Chambon village is probably Camping les Bombes.
