I emailed one site we were interested in and their premium sites are full but they have standard available - camping Brugger. Would 5 nights be enough to see a bit of The Black Forest?
Also thinking of other areas to visit that may not be so busy. Any ideas? Would the Mosel region be a little quieter? We have to travel July and August.
Our motorhome is an old one so we would not be able to do cities cos of emmissions I believe.
All ideas gratefully received.

Munstertal is a good site and with the free travel card supplied by the site train journeys are free within the black forest. We used it to go to Freiburg and other places.

lizzie have a look at Trend Camping near to Wolfach, more in the centre of the Black Forest near to wonderful small town of Wolfach. Free Konus Card given for free transport and very close to Railway and Bus Service. Very nice rural site we have used it twice and loved it. Very friendly owners and lovely restaurant. Excellent Facilities. ACSI Camping Card taken too.

The Mosel is a lovely area but like all Germany will be busy in July/August. For more info on Mosel too much to write on here email me on dvphillips14 at hotmail.com

We stayed at Schluchsee last year. With the free card there is loads to do. 5 days will give you a taster but Germany is a vast country it will make you want to return.
Have a great holiday.

Can always recommend Landal Warsberg in Saarburg in the Mosel, just across the border from Luxembourg.

Just what happened to us! Had 6 nights in 2 locations in Germany on our way to Switzerland last year and are back this year for about 12 nights (plus a week or so in Holland, which we also really like, on our way there and back). Can't wait!

Hi Bofs - where did you go and where did you stay? what are you going back to see?
The five days we were talking about were to see the Black Forest. Intending to spend time elsewhere if we like Germany. From what we have read, the Black forest seems to be particularly busy and hence we will book this site but wondering if five days is enough for this area and where we else we should explore and if we can get away with not booking for July and August to give us some flexibility.

We stayed at Camping Prumtal at Oberweis for a couple of nights, from where we visited Trier on the Mosel (the oldest town in Germany, well worth a visit) and which is also well placed to visit Vianden in Luxembourg. We then had 4 nights at Terrassencamping, Herbolzheim, just north of Freiberg, from where we visited Triberg (home of cuckoo clocks, Black Forest gateau and Germany's highest waterfall- a very pleasant visit and not as strenuous as it sounds!) There are also summer toboggan runs in the area and Freiberg itself, which we did not get to see. We did cycle into the town (which has an excellent ice-cream parlour) and around the immediate area along some of the quiet back roads in the area. The Germans in general we found very friendly and accommodating, and we enjoyed the scenery and touristy things in both areas. Towards the end of August, we found Camping Prumtal very busy with quite cramped pitches and with more shade than we liked, being in a valley, and preferred the layout of the site at Herbolzheim which we thought more spacious and which was much smaller and less crowded. However, we could not fault the attitude of the owners/managers, the facilities and cleanliness at either site, so just our personal preference.
This time we're heading for the Rhine near Bingen and will be there for one of the Rhine in Flames nights in early July. We plan to stay for about a week but could stay longer if the weather is kind as there seems to be plenty to do in the area.

We went to Black Forest last july for 10 nights. We stayed at Camping Herbolzheim and loved it.
Good spacious site and very well run. Walk into village, municipal pool next door. Pool got busy when locals came home from school despite water freezing.
We travelled easily to all local attractions and was pleased with our location.
We visited some other campsites further into the Forest and found most of them very crammed, and due to their position within the mountains lost sun by afternoon/ early eve.
Our pitch at Herbolzheim was in sun all day until late.
Weather fab at 40 degrees most days too!
Regards

It says on the price list on their website that dogs are not accepted between 15th July and 15th August.

We are heading back to Munstertal this summer also. Its a lovely 5* site. What pitch are you being offered as may be able to throw some light on it?

Sanitary facilities are second to none, lovely restaurant on site, indoor and outdoor pools lovely (with view of Belchen mountain), well stocked shop onsite, bike hire, very low key "entertainment" (local oomphah band for instance) couple of nights a week plus organised sports if you want

Staufen is a couple of miles cycle and lovely little BF town with some nice restaurant and shops. Cafe Decca well worth a visit for cake or ice cream or meal (all good). Lidl/Aldi (can't remember!) here also. Get free train from outside campsite into Staufen if not into cycling or walking. Can also get train into Freiburg or down to Basel with one change at Bad Krozingen.
other way out of camp is Munstertal istelf and also has some nice cafe's and a Rewe supermarket literally outside the train station very easy to get to and from (or walk in 15 mins)

Hour up road in Rust is probably best theme park outside the States in Europa Park. kids or no kids well worth a day (or two or three personally). Travel up to see Belchen if camper van is up to it and go up to peak on cable car and have hot chocolate overlooking the west and southern Black Forest over into France.

Find one of the Rodehlbahns and fly down a mountain in your own toboggan - great fun! Eat cake and drink coffee everywhere and try one of many many local brews if into your beers

5 days will give you a nice little taster. Camping Munstertal will give you a nice base at Southern point and you can go back and do northern parts another time

You will need to pay cash for pitch at end of stay as cards wont be accepted and electric useage is not included but charged separate. Standard pitches are OK nothing special but do have waste and water on pitch

We have not been offered a specific pitch at munstertal but know there are only standard left. They want 200 euros deposit by Sepa payment. Just not sure whether to go ahead or wing it and see what happens. It does sound a good site though. Trend camping also has availability.

Yes we had to pay a deposit this year also - not last time

Don't have a lot to compare to on German sites but we are going back, the site was certainly one of the best we have stayed anywhere overall and loved the area and more to explore still

good luck wherever you choose
