Hello again. So, as I understand, it's illegal to have speed camera warnings on your satnav. However, is it okay to use a satnav with this facility disabled, or do the powers that be frown upon said satnav, if it's capable of this function?
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Yes just turn off the camera facility - there is a whopping great fine plus confiscation of the device if you get caught.
If this is your first time in France be aware they use more mobile speed cameras than we do, so if you see a driver flashing you for no apparent reason, there's probably a trap soon after. They can be sneaky too. Sometimes they wait a short distance after a peage to catch people speeding after being held up at the peage.

In France its OK to have them just disabled, however in Switzerland its illegal to have them on the device.
if you have downloaded "camera updates "recently on your sat nav (last 3/4 years)then what you have on your sat nav is perfectly legal , it will not show speed cameras per se only "danger areas " which are perfectly legal
this applies to tomtom & garmin
in effect your sat nav does indicates areas where speed cameras are in use but not individual cameras
you must be careful as the French tend to conceal their cameras in the most unlikely places & mobile cameras are widely used

It's all very simple ... don't have it switched on, if your system has it, but OK if for 'danger areas' (as Old Chap says) ....
and ...
Stick to the signed limits.
If you don't ... then you deserve anything the law serves up.
Even if you have the facility switched on, even in France or any EU country they would require a warrant from a court to check the Satnav as the device would contain personal data.
I would just disable this option on the satnav to stay on the safe side. As the above user mentioned they have would have to have a warrant from a court to check the satnav first before they could do anything.
As Kelper says, if yours shows Danger Areas, that is ok

Kelper. You could have stopped at ''All very simple....'' In fact you could have left that bit out, and gone with the good advice of, ''turn it off' If you read the original post, I wasn't implying that I wanted to break any landspeed records, simply asking a question. thanks to all!!!!
richeac ... my post was, in no way, directed at you, or suggesting that you ignored speed limits ...
It was aimed at the considerable number of people who do 'speed', whilst towing or not, and the danger they place the rest of us in.
I doubt any of the contributors to this thread fall into that category ... and probably very few members of this site.
I just have no sympathy for those who bleat about having to turn of their speed camera warnings ... I wish all sat navs were universally banned from having them on their systems, it encourages misuse.
Unfortunately the design of most sat nav programmes means that they have to be adjusted for some countries ... mind you, if I followed my own advice to the letter, I'd have to advocate that you turn off/disable your speed camera detector for all countries, permanently ... I'm just off to do that!
Thank God for 'cruise control'.
I agree with Kelper ,just turn it off ,Its a sat nav not a speed camera detector , if you wanted one you would have bought one Enjoy your trip.
One another matter regarding sat nav. When you get
co-ordinates from ACSI try and check them with the campsites website ,they often differ , and I would always take the website version !
