Trying to sort out our summer holiday and this is our dilemma.

Want to tow the caravan abroad but don't want to spend ages in the car getting somewhere, however, want to get some decent weather.

Also have football mad 15 year old son who wants some football interest; playing, visiting stadiums etc.

Any suggestions welcome because I am tearing my hair out trying to find somewhere

If you want definite hot summer weather a short drive from the ferry port your best bet is to take the long crossing from either Portsmouth or Plymouth to Santander. If you take a shorter channel crossing you will be in northern France with weather patterns similar to UK south coast.

First questions that spring to mind :

"decent weather" - do you mean mid 20s guaranteed, the type you can get in Brittany, the Loire and Vendee, or scorching South Of France type of weather ?

"don't want to spend ages in the car" - so within a day of the ports / 2 days / more than 2 days ?

"have football mad 15 year old son who wants some football interest; playing, visiting stadiums" - does this need to be a visit to recognised huge teams like Dortmund / PSG / Milan / etc or would he be happy to see anything eg a friendly at Angers ?

when had you in mind - because most football stops over the Summer and starts again mid August or so, but that varies greatly from country to country. You've also got the Euros in France this June but that will be hard to get tickets for.

My initial thought is Loire in mid August btw - close to the ferry, decent weather and a few teams (Angers / Tours) who would be playing friendlies and maybe even league games.

Thanks for your thoughts. We really only want to spend 1 or 2 days maximum travelling from Buckinghamshire to our destination. Looking for dryer weather than south coast here but not necessarily scorching hot.

My son is at school so the Euro 2016 time in June is out so we are looking at August. As long as there is somewhere for him to play football on site (some form of training would be good but not essential) and perhaps a decent stadium or two in the area to have a look around he would be happy. Aware that this is the closed season as far as watching football is concerned but, as you say Arthur, there may be a friendly we could watch.

If anyone has any suggestions regarding areas/sites to book that would be really great.

It depends how much you are prepared to spend on ferry crossings. Dover to Calais or Dunkirk is cheapest but far more costly overnight Portmouth to St Malo crossing puts you down in a nice holiday area with plenty of suitable campsites within up to a 4hr hour drive.

I would check prices for Dover routes on P&O & DFDS websites & Brittany Ferries for the longer routes & go from there. Large family campsites will often have football pitches with organised games & training etc.

The Vannes area in the Gulf de Morhiban is not too far, as it is on the Gulf Stream the weather there in kind all year round, there are also some nice sites in the area suitable for kids, and if you like sunsets, this is one of the best places to be

2 days travel from Bucks and fairly guaranteed weather would imo lead you to either Loire, Brittany (lots of football clubs but not just as good weather) or Vendee (better weather but no football clubs).

Personally I would go for the Loire, somewhere between Saumur and Tours - more or less guaranteed decent weather, close to the ports, Angers football club nearby. Probably better to look at larger sites with organised sports and football pitches. If you are nearer Tours, Paris is just over 2 hrs away so a tour of PSG's ground might be possible.

Brittany on the other hand (somewhere near Vannes) is close to Nantes and Rennes (big clubs) and Lorient for more football options than the Loire.

French league football tends to start on the weekend nearest Aug 8, so you might be able to see some games OK, there will be friendlies for a week or so before that date. Search for "match amical" for friendlies (they wont be organised until mid July or so) and here for Ligue 1 fixtures

The municipal site in Auxerre is right opposite the Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps, home of (currently) Ligue 2 side, and just about a day's drive, down quiet roads. It's part of a large civic sporting complex, with swimming pool, kayaking etc. It's a good stopover site; though not a usual destination.

has football pitches and staff to organise football stuff

aswell as many other sporty things to do

Years ago when we were in the Bordeaux region we went to a FC Girondins de Bordeaux activity day in a village, which was quite fun. I haven't managed to google anything like that but they do courses and advertise them in English, This one is 'come as a a team' but the contact details are there in case you wanted to ask them if they had anything suitable for a young English-speaker
