Try the Bordeaux coast, it will be less commercial than the area further north near Il de Re, La Rochelle area.
Bordeaux has history, vineyards, nature, the sea and several beautiful lakes, namely Lacanau Lac.
There is cycling (100k of off road piste), surfing, wind surfing, kayaking...fabulous

We first visited this area 15 years ago, and it started our love affair with this area.
You will need stop over, so consider Saumur as a half way point. Le Chantepie is a perfect location , overlooking the Loire from a wide plateau.
This site gets very busy with people travelling south or back up north:

I advise from experience, and recommendations from like minded campers who contribute to this forum. I joined in 2010 and have had some 'gems' from people.
PS we are going to Lake Garda this year, so this is a whole new area for us to explore.
Bon vacances

Il de Re is beautiful, the campsites are not so good.
Many years ago we camped near St Martin, cam back in the mainland and drive south to Le Tedey.
Le Tedey is a paradise for families.
We tend to prefer what are classed as 'Cool Camping'...so a back to nature experience but NOT NATURIST...we've all made that mistake when searching.
We rarely go anywhere twice but have been back to Le Tedey about 8 times between 2000 and last year.
The campsite is in a forest by a lake, it is EDEN. If you want a beach there is 200k beach from just north of Lacanau towards Biarritz. No high rise hotels, just an endless blonde beach.
The beauty of this place is the fact that there is a network of purpose built cycle paths, they link up all the beaches and the two lakes. You can hire bikes, which is what we did the first time, now we take our own.
The website is a bit'bling' but it is far from it. There is everything on site that you can possibly need. It is far removed from Yelloh Village or Castells that you can get. This site is privately owned and immaculate. NO POOL...but you don't need it when you have a lake.
Give it a squint

joining this one late - if you are looking at Ile de Rey then some friends of ours love this place they have been going for years and have teenagers.
If you like more relaxed and laid back camping in a beautiful location with lots of space then Camping Les Ormes is my favourite campsite of all time. It's about 20 mins from Bergerac so just below the Dordogne. Plenty to do, your teenagers would have company as kids of all ages, stunning countryside and a very relaxed vibe. I've driven it in a day from Calais and easily in a day on a Western crossing but equally have done a stopover too.
