Hi all,
Going to France with my bil and his wife, who have never been abroad in their caravan though have been campers for 30 + years.
Was thinking of somewhere near the WW 2 beaches, near Caen , bayeux, bar on site, public transport nearby, have been searching all day but now my heads mashed, any ideas , my sister and bil might come as well, so three units,
TIA

When are you going? some sites that are are easy in June are crowded by the end of July. So recommendations will depend on your dates.

After Easter which is 16/4/17 next year and before July ,
So basically between 23 /4/16 to 30th June 2017,
It's the wife's birthday 21 May so if anything was happening ... Events etc might be good to tie in round that,
Any help would be appreciated as there's three things to look at,
Three couples,
We,ve only travelled in a motorhome abroad,
Bil ain't been abroad,
Sister ain't been to France, but hubbies a wagon driver , so we might have to follow him ... Indian style lol
Public transport so we can all have a tipple would be good as well
TIA

Ok, that makes it easy.

How about the ferry from Portsmouth to Caen, drive 11 miles west along the coast and all three of you pull in at Camping Le Champ des Courses at Courseulles sur Mer. Reviews are on here.

Site is on the sea front, bars + cafes + restaurants are a short stroll along the road. Price in May about £16 for two people with car and caravan and electrics - they charge a small booking fee on top of that but you won't need to book in May. Then maybe push on along the coast and come back to UK on the ferry from Cherbourg . No worries. Take care.

Hi Berriow. If I may just jump in here, have you camped at the site you mention at Courseulles sur Mer?

We are visiting that area in June this year and I have been wondering about sites, not decided on anywhere yet.

We stopped overnight there before a Caen ferry home - a big well run municipal close to the town centre which suited us,. The reviews on here describe it well.

Big Brian - have a look at the ACSI Card website - www.campingcard.co.uk for details of a guide and card which will give you a discount on over 1600 sites in France. Some sites are available from as little as 11 euros per night, for pitch, two adults, car and caravan (or motorhome or tent), awning, electricity and one dog. If the other couples are taking their own outfits, then you'll need a card for each couple, but the discounts can be considerable on some sites.

Also, as per Berriow's suggestion, have a look at the website http://www.camping-municipal.org/ which will give you details of many other municipal sites in case you decide to tour rather than stay in one place. You might also want to get the 'Le Guide Officiel Camping Caravanning' which is available from Amazon, and gives details of all campsites in France.

In France at the time of year you're planning you won't need to book anywhere and can just go as you please.

Ste-Mere-Eglise, nice flat site plenty of pitches just on the edge of the town, centre of which is a short stroll away big American museum in the centre of town. Markets held in town square which also has the church with the parachutist effigy still hanging from the bell tower, as depicted in the film The Longest day. Plenty of Restaurants to choose from. This is a good base to explore the region for WW2 beaches and war graves. Have stopped there a few times never booked always able to find a pitch and that was in late June early July

The seaside towns near Houlgate are very pretty.
I also like Honfleur, it's a beautiful, historic town.
I'd go for anywhere around there.

Great site, walk in to town, steeped in WW2.
