I did Calais to Interlaken a few years ago, and followed advice to travel to Lille then through Belgium to Luxembourg, back into France at Metz then into Germany briefly before Basel and finally into Switzerland.Tthe reasoning is that there a no tolls, its quite quick (but not as wuick as through France), its a tried and trusted truckers route and you can get very cheap petrol in Luxembourg. This is all true.
However I found that the experience of driving on Belgian motorways shortened my life expectation by a considerable number of years, and on the way home we took the more expensive, but much more pleasant route through the Jura in France - past Besancon, Troyes and Reims. It helped my sanity no end. There is a slightly longer, but slightly quicker French route through the Vosges past Strasbourg and Metz too.
Up to you which benefit you want to take. For what it's worth, if I was doing it again I'd go via the Jura.
Also, dont forget your motorway vignette for Switzerland, you can buy one online from the Swiss tourist office in the UK before you go.
As for overnights, Formule 1 or (our preferred) B&B hotel chains are very convenient, they both tend to be close to motorways and in the retail parks on the edge of towns. Again you can book online or pick up a map/brochure when you get there. We stayed in the B&B in Metz on the way down and the B&B in Saint-Quentin on the way home, but it will obviously depend on your ferry timings where you stop.
