We are arriving approx 9.30 in Caen and wanting an over night stop around an hour from port. We usually stay at le puits but going south so need one between Caen and Le Mans. The ones I've tried close at 10 any ideas. We are travelling to costa brava so any other overnight stops on route would be helpful
TIA

Several sites around Ouistreham port itself remain open for late arrivals from the ferry , but I doubt whether you will find any sites 40 or 50 miles away on the way to Le Mans still open at that time of night - unless someone knows of a small municipal site with no barrier and no resident warden. I know one like that near Roscoff but that's no help to you.

We do the same....have stayed in picnic areas/ laybys before about an hour away from ferry...tend to play it by ear and see how tired I am.

Last year we drove to the indigo site in sille le guillaume and just parked up outside the site at around 11.30pm as it's off the road and the only people that were likely to pass were on site....we just got up whenever we did the next day and then just rolled in when they opened.

I recall that there was a very big gathering of campers and caravans in a place in alencon, but dont recall where this was, but will keep an eye out for it when we go that way in Aug and stop the if I am not able to drive on to indigo.

Note that we avoid the piage

Dont think you will find anywhere that will take you in after 9-10pm,sites near port best ,then get good run at it in the morning, when we go to Costa Brava we travel 440 miles next day traveling 220m in the A.M. and 220m in the P.M. with 30 mins break at lunchtime and a couple of 10 min breaks for comfort, and stop at a site called Panoramic at Payrac in the dordogne ,The dutch owner is very layed back and frindly and tells you just park anywhere,no delimited pitches and you can arrive quite late, sometimes we dont even unhitch, just put a couple of steadys down and get a quick getaway in the morning. The next stop would be the site you are staying at.We had to be quite strict with ourselves as we only used to go for 2 weeks in school holidays with the kids, not like that now we are retired,we can take a gentle week to get to our destination and still have 6 or more weeks on site.

Vimoutiers municipal might suit you, 1 hour from Caen (though not on the most direct road to Le Mans if that matters), It says they close at 1930, but there's a phone number you can try to see if they allow late arrivals.

The other possibilities are the Formule 1 hotels in North Caen, East Caen, Alencon. Also the B&B hotels in more or less the same locations - North Caen, South Caen and Alencon
They both usually allow late arrivals by keypad entry, though you dont say if you're touring or not, if you are it might be more awkward getting car park space or you might not want to leave it outside overnight.

Depending on your route and travelling distances, the site at Loubeyrat near Riom in the Auvergne, just off the A71 is nice, cheap and has a very good auberge opposite selling hearty country food.

Thank you, we are touring and would prefer a site as not to leave the van. Will definitely try the sites mentioned
Thank you

We always arrive at Caen at 9.30 pm for our August/Sept trip to travel on to the Dordogne. We usually drive from Caen for 1 - 1.30 hours and stop at the Aire de Service near Argentat.
I know many people do not recommend overnights at Aires but this one is very well lit and not too busy. There are always several other caravans or motorhomes stopping overnight.
