In August we are camping in Brantome and interested in canoeing, fishing, cycling and eating out etc.

Any recommendations of where to do these things like hire canoes or where to cycle ?

I don't mind a drive to get better canoeing or fishing if that's the case.

It's our first inland French trip and need to keep the kids entertained as some way from the beaches we have done in previous trips.

It depends how old the children are who need to be kept entertained. I fear that older teenagers might find Brantome as sedate and boring as I did. Younger ones might well be happy to play on the campsite, which is certainly popular and very well liked, but we just stayed a day or two and moved on. It just isn't the location for us - too far from the main stretch of the Dordogne river where all the kids found action and fun. Sorry.

We had 2 nights at Brantome at the beginning of June this year. Brantome itself is pleasant enough for a stroll round, it's within walking distance of the site, and has plenty of restaurants although we didn't eat out.

We don't have canoes or fishing rods, but we take bikes and had intended cycling there. We did on the day after we arrived, but on checking with the site and the tourist office, there are no cycle routes, so we devised our own. It's all on road cycling although there are some quiet roads around, but the landscape is somewhat undulating, ie rather hilly in places. We had a pleasant enough cycleride, but decided to move on next day as there was really nothing else to interest us there.

It depends on how old the children are of course as Berriow said above.

Are you staying at Camping Brantome Peyrelevade? The site does have a swimming pool and also a sandy beach on the river. They also have a mini Club for kids up to about 12. We stayed there in 2013 and we walked into the town which is attractive enough. Like Ina we have a motorhome so a couple of days was enough for us, it didn't help that it was very wet as well!!!

Lunching at Auberge la Marmite at St Pierre de Cole is one of our regular delights when at Brantome. Sunday lunch is very nice but needs booking.

Nice place to visit is Bourdeilles which if into cycling is a 14 odd mile return trip along the flat plesant valley from Brantome.

Canoes can be hired just down the road from Le Peyrelevade!

Why don't you check out the Tourist Office website.   link.The cliff zip-wire thingy looks pretty cool to me!

I rather liked Brantome when we stayed there last year but we didn't have kids in tow!

Brantome in itself is small and pretty and the Fridy market is really good (even in a thunderstorm as it was this year!) we only stayed a couple of nights and that seemed enough.

Well we have two weeks booked there and found out a fair bit about stuff to do locally.
It's always nice to get actual recommendations on things though which this thread has done.

The kids will be ok at 8 and 11, and not too needy. Going have a crack at fishing the river with my son.

Yes we are staying at Le Peyrelevade on a river pitch.

Only 3 weeks to go, can't wait now.
