I'm currently pitched on a German site and am looking to move on to France in the next few days, last minute change of plans means we're considering doing a few days in France on the way back home but I've done no research ahead of time.
Can anyone recommend somewhere family friendly but peaceful, in a pleasant (preferably rural) area and within 4-5 hours drive of Calais? Somewhere to have a relaxing few days and experience a bit of France. Either specific camp sites or just a region would be really helpful.
Cheers.

Sounds like you need to be heading for somewhere around Troyes. Lac D'Orient springs to mind, but I've not camped there. Remember it is the French school holidays so anywhere very popular will be busy.
Maybe try here in Champagne region. Lovely municipal site, it's actually like being in someones back garden, pretty rural but great for touring some champagne houses.
Always best to phone or email ahead to reserve a pitch.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Lac D'orient is a lovely site! You havevswimming pools onsite plus the lake and beach just over the road outside the campsite!
Lots of cycling routes if you have bikes.
They often had organised events my husband and daughter had a go on some segways when we stayed there.
However I did read another post on here suggesting a number of their pitches were waterlogged this season and not sure what space they would have but would thoroughly recommend! Check out the reviews and ring them to check if they have space.
Thanks for the advice. Whilst we aimed for the Loire with traffic delays we had to aim further north so have ended up on a site near Troyes. Practically speaking it should make departure for the ferry easier, it's a lot closer.
By any chance can someone think of somewhere reasonably close by that we could take a picnic, frisbee and enjoy tomorrow's sunshine in relative peace?
And any 'must see's' in the area for later in the week?
