We are in the Loire, The weather over last couple of weeks has improved dramatically and unfortunately so have the insects that bite you. They seem to be making up for lost time!!! Doesn't ruin our holiday, just a bit of a nuisance, go out at night and you can get savaged without protection and folk's who normally don't get bitten are suffering. Not so bad during the day at the moment as the wind is quite high, which given the current temperatures is most welcome. Evening time is when they have you!!!
You might want to stock in the UK with your weapon of choice as buying it in France is in our experince more expensive.
Our weapons of choice are Jungle Spray, citronella candles (Are candles not just a waste of time?), a blue light thing and a electronic bat which we count towards our exercise regime.

Just back from Brittany and even with all the sprays vapour blocks and nets down on all windows & door we both woke up with bites from the blighters. Just an irritation for me but my poor wife comes out in big wet blisters no matter what spray, ointment or potion was used. It didn't stop us having a great holiday tho.

We had the same problem in the UK a few weeks ago! Midges, and mozzies because the weather had been warm for a few days where previously it had been wet and cold! everyone suffered from bites, my poor son looked like he had some sort of lurgy as they really seemed to like him!!

I guess it's what the OP has said, they are making up for lost time!

Have you tried the mozzie repelant discs which you separate then light at one end. Put one under your table when sitting out. Cost about 2 euro from any large supermarket.
The mozzies were particularly hungry at Chantepie about 3 weeks ago but by lighting these discs at night and using jungle formula spray we only had one or two bites the whole 5 weeks we were away. J x

After a few days of being eaten despite using candles and lamps, hubby started to wear mosquito repellant bands. Just a £1 from pound shop for 2 bands. Wear on wrist like bracelet and hey no more bites for him. Will def use again cheap and successful.

We use the repellent wipes quite early on - say about 4pm on a normal day - and then back this up with a repellent spray in the early evening. A bit more at bed time seems to do the trick. We also use citronella candles or citronella oil when sitting outside in the evenings. In the past we have been known to shut the caravan up totally about an hour before retiring and spray the interior thoroughly.
In the past we have found that the Jungle Formula roll-on smoothed carefully all over seems to work well. I am a fair-skinned red head so they love me. I have been known to get bitten between the aircraft steps and the terminal building when visiting family in Spain. This year they seemed to leave me alone, but well and truly got OH!

Ohh yes, very hungry bitey things this year - Camping Olivet at Orleans (OK, by a river so should expect some I guess) but we were both bitten quite a bit. The damp and wet from earlier in the season has obviously been a boom for breeding the blighters. One even drew blood on my OH's leg...

Candles for us, and After Bite for after the bites, plus antihistamine and 1 per cent hydrocortisone bite cream.

We have had good results with smidge after hearing about it on here. Recently had a lot in the garden and our son had a few bites. Sprayed him with smudge and no more bites since.

Hi Julie... Off to Chantepie at the weekend for 13 nights, just read your review, hopefully they have sorted it out since... :-( Reviews were great when we booked, then a week later Indigo took it over...

Taken on board your midge report, and following the positives reports on here about smidge, ordered two cans to take with us...

We are going to France but not till September - will the biting little blighters still be around then?

I don't usually get bitten and if I do I don't get much of a reaction but was bitten in Holland in late June this year about 5 times and they were very itch and much worse than usual.
