Simple fit deflectors!
Nobody has said you ahouldn't use deflectors just that it isn't a legal requirement!
I drive at night with my headlamps dipped and set at their lowest and have never been flashed in 30 plus years.

But you don't bother? So dipped beams and set at lowest angle and we're all fully compliant. The evidence being that you haven't been flashed in 30 years. OP needn't bother then. Thanks for clearing that up.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
I didn't say that everyone would be compliant those are your words!
I never said that the OP needn't bother again your words!
My comments have all been to do with the fact that it is not a legal requirement and left it to individuals to decide whether or not they need to use them, not make ludicrous statements abot everyone disembarking from a ferry being fined!

The law is fairly clear, if stopped you would be liable as simply lowering lights does not in any way affect the lateral direction of the beam, therefore the risk of dazzling other road users still exists. It would be up to the discretion of the gendarmerie wether to apply a fine or not
Am I missing something in this thread? Eurolites are about 3 from Amazon, not 30 or 300 as you might guess from some of the posts on here. If you can't afford 3 to be compliant and perhaps prevent an accident then I feel really sorry for you.

The fine levied is for dazzling oncoming motorists, not being able to!
That is like saying because my car is capable of breaking the speed limit I can be fined without committing the offence.

I don't think it's you who is missing the point. 😑
All European countries subscribe to a law that states: ‘Your vehicle’s headlights MUST be adjusted so as not to cause dazzle to other road users’. Failure to comply means you are liable to be fined if you are stopped and you also risk ‘invalidating’ your insurance - as your car is deemed ‘unroadworthy’ in the eyes of the law.
Flipping heck, I started something didn't I!! Well I've ordered beam benders for £4 from Amazon, whilst they may or may not be necessary I thought I'd get them to be 100% polite to other road users!! Especially as the vans lights are higher than a car!!
Thanks for the entertainment guys reading the posts!
lowering your lights does direct them down below the eye level of motorists going the other way so does mean you won't dazzle them BUT it also means you don't have much light on roadside signs - like speed restrictions and sharp bends
What posters are missing here is that just because UK headlights dip to the left it does not mean they dazzle oncoming drivers when driving on the right. Modern headlamps have dipped beams that light the surface of the road not at driver's eye level so do not dazzle oncoming drivers.
images on the link clearly show the direction of headlight beam.
modern cars will still light roughly the same patch of road as this is set by the MOT standards and very little to do with the age of car it is all about the direction of the beam.
lowering the beam, (normally done internally or under the bonnet) simply moves the main 'patch' of light from a further distance down the road to one closer too you.
So in effect all lowering the beam will do is mean the driver gets closer to you before being dazzled. hope this clears it up.

You certainly provided entertainment :-)
It is so good reading all the know it all posts, even when they are getting told by someone on the post that has lived there for years they still try to push their point. Brilliant.
My daughter is knicking my beam benders from me as she is taking her kids over to France in a fortnight and even though will do no night driving she likes to keep things right.
Does not take after her dad that way.

Lol Shropshire! Such fun - am always amazed how such reasonable questions can generate seemingly 'unfriendly' responses on this forum! Where do these people go camping anyway - we only seem to meet nice tolerant empathic peeps on sites!
You have done well with the 40 odd responses btw especially for a new boy!
Top tip: Now try "Is it dangerous to fit a reverse polarity adapter whilst wearing Speedos on black Friday near Calais?

That's the beauty of the internet :). I'm sure we are all reasonable, empathetic people in person, it's just far too difficult to read a tone of voice.
Any way I hope we all continue to have fantastic holidays on the continent, and would gladly share a glass of vin with anyone regardless of their views on the prevention of dazzling other motorists.
Quick question picked up some solar lights today would these be ok to use on the continent or would they also need deflectors?

You would have to put blinkers on them as if British the French sun would be too long and bright and might damage them.
