Hi we are travelling from Calais to Vendee and I'm wondering what the best route is?
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also do we have to use toll roads to get there?

Hi Jobaby.

We take the toll route for ease (we have a sanef Tag so don't queue and the passenger can sleep) via the A28.

Basic route is
Calais - Rouen - Le Mans - Cholet - La Roche sur yon and then on to which ever resort.

The tolls roads are lovely and quiet - the only slowish part is through Rouen.

Class 2 tolls to la rochelle for example are about €144 each way and 8 - 9 hours driving time. The toll free route is at least 12 hours driving.
If you visit viamichelin.com you can play around with the options.

We tend to break the journey either side of Le Mans - if you are comfortable with aires I can recommend a few. if not I would aim for the municiple campsite at Beaumont Sur Sarthe.

I use an app called aires.car by camping.car magazine.

It is in french but easy to navigate - might be with taking a look at that

for your satnav french postcodes are normally 5 digit numbers such as 17220
the rest is as per UK addresses. it also pays to learn how to use GPS co-ordinates on your satnav if the postcode covers a large rural area.

Hi Jo, i'm curious to know. Are you attempting this journey that you, presumably, have never been on before without a detailed French road map ?   If you are then you deserve to get lost. Sorry, but it seems a bit foolhardy to me. Hope you get there ok and have a good holiday.

Hi Jo, Sorry. I meant it in a constructive way. That's the problem with the written word, you can't put expression in it. You're going on a long unfamiliar journey and I must have misunderstood your phrase of '' can somebody point me in the right direction''.
        We've been in stopping places all over Europe and have been approached by stressed people and families who haven't a clue where they are. Only last year at an aire in France a New Zealand family came over to us and asked which town they were in, and they didn't have a French map !!
    I'll assume then that you'll be relying on a back up map,in case the technology fails. Have a good trip

Hi Missmally, yes, have an adventure, we've had loads.( North cape in Norway last year 7,000 miles), follow the sun set, but in Western France, which has a maritime climate, the sun may not be shining. if an emergency occurs with your vehicle or a family member the first thing they'll ask you is your position. What will you say..... You don't know? Travelling on holidays, whilst you're feeling good and elated and excited must be treated with a degree of seriousness. Then you can enjoy a safe journey and all the other things that you went on holiday for.

You can also follow the stars by locating the North star. If you look up and see the saucepan constelation (also known as The Plough but I think it looks more like a saucepan) and go slightly diagonal from the right hand corner of the pan, the first distant (not very bright) star is the North star. (google it in images - plough and north star)
If the maritime weather blocks this views you can observe the trees for direction - there is nearly always more foliage and branches on the South facing side of a tree.
Of course it's no good telling someone in an emergency that you are located by the 2nd tree on the left about 60 miles from Paris, for that I would use my smart phone with GPS!
