After a very successful trip around the UK last year (4weeks and 1 night) we are planning on going to France this year, we have not got anything booked yet and are looking at going in a few days time (4/5 of august) for a little over 2 weeks. My partner is at work till the 3rd and left me to work out when where etc
She is starting to get a little bit apprehensive about not having any sites booked, I plan on driving south and stopping to camp as we go but that's as far as my plans have gotten me, does this sound foolhardy or am I likely to find sites with space for a tt without to much issue?
There will be 2 adults and 2 kids I don't need or want a large campsites with the water slides etc small local sites with basic facilities will do us. My partner would not mind a pool but that's not so important as we can pop to the coast etc.
My other little niggles;
Flexi ferry tickets say we can catch another ferry as long as the number so days match, does that mean if I book the ferry for midnight and then miss it I can not catch the one the next day?
How much should I be looking at paying per night for campsites?
We wont have electric hookup and generally park up with the tents will we be able to do this in France? (I know we are going to have issues with the coolbox)
Should I bother to take the fire pit?
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
I'm assuming you have either a TT/FC, would be good for everyone if you filled in your details(unit/location)in your profile.
You are hitting France right in high season so some sites might be full, would be best to have some sort of plan and phone ahead.
Campsites without the bells and whistles should be low e20 to under e20, Municipal sites are often the cheapest.
Don't know about the ferry as we use the train.
Don't bother with the fire pit.

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I've been to France with the FC around this time of year and not booked anything in advance. We just followed the sun around the country and stayed at the municipal sites. Some were very nice with pools and I didn't have any problems getting in. I had the Michelin Camping book and picked sites from that. It was great and very flexible.
We use the train too so don't know about the ferry. And ditto the fire pit. Use the space to take an extra gas bottle as we ran out and couldn't get one anywhere.
We have just returned from France and Germany having booked only a couple of campsites. We had no trouble getting in anywhere even coastal regions eg ile d'Oleron and Brittany and that was during the French main holiday time. I must admit we were a bit nervous about this but it worked out fine. The campsites we went to tended to be small and quite a few municipals so it should be even easier af the time you are going.

At the moment even the biggest campsites will probably have some space - this is a very bad year for tourism in general, and so I think you should have no problem at all. We found sites with free pitches, pools, bars and restaurants, right up to the 20th July (usually absolutely peak season).
Would it be worth booking the first site befoe you go? That way you have somewhere to aim for and can plan for the length of journey and what time you need to arrive in France. Then stay for a few days and get into the swing of it.
