You can get an insurance policy that just tops up your EHIC card. That way you're not paying for stuff that's already covered. I think we got it from a comparison website last year.

The Tunnel will cover you with the Passage you buy from them or the Caravan Club. For breakdown we always use German ADAC which costs under £100 for a year including the UK.

My wife broke her leg in France, 2yrs ago. She had to be flown home, not air ambulance, but on 3 seats on a scheduled flight, with a paramedic attendant, ambulance transfers from the hospital and to home. EHIC covered the medical side very well, but our insurance (ADAC) covered the repatriation. I dread to think how much it would have cost!
Was that in the south of France? I remember offering our help as we were only a few miles away from you.
Yes, Pukka! it was at Avignon. I remember your very kind offer of help, I cant remember if I thanked you enough,(I was under some stress) but ADAC were great(after an initial hiccup) and provided all that I needed.

Thanks again. Just looked at a comparison site and it is quoting as little as £11.98.

We had to pay for ours when hubby had an accident even with the card, they wouldn't accept it as we had to go to private drs and they just shook their heads so we ended up paying and claiming it back on insurance. For what it costs id pay it tbh its not worth the hassle.

Please be careful with comparison sites cheapest really isn't the best and often does fit the bill when you have to claim. Be sure that you fully declare any medical conditions and ensure that the quote covers them as the cheapest might quote but hide in the small print that the condition isn't covered. I work in commercial insurance so I know the pit falls. I have paid 30 pounds for single trip policy for my 19yr old son as he is no longer covered by our free bank policy the premium includes cover for his anxiety not that this is likely to cause a claim but had to disclose it in case he has an accident and they then refuse to pay due to not declaring his condition. So please be wary.

Gosh, thanks for all the advice. I am covered with Nationwide account but the rest of the family are not. Hadn't even thought about declaring the nut allergy - I thought it was things like high blood pressure.
