Having been confined to camping in France..VW camper...during end July and August we are now able to go mid September.
I note some sites close end September but wondered if places will still have lots of campers about as don't want everywhere to be like a ghost town!
I'm assuming places like Sarlat one is able to actually get around with it being so crowded.
What is the weather like in Landes area? Even in height of summer overnight or early morning showers are common. Will we need to heasily further south for better weather? What is weather like in the Loire that time of year?
Do supermarkets stop their Sunday openings? Finally the night markets that are so popular in July and August, do they tend to cease?
Thank you

We will probably be in the Burgundy area at this time and have ordered warm, dry, sunny and mild wind conditions.
Accordingto MeteoFrance, the forecast for Landes in the period 22/8/2016 to 4/9/2016 is for the temperature levels to be down to the normal levels . i.e 28°- 30°C
We usually go away in Sept, and yes, things do close down somewhat. Night markets seem to stop at the end of August.
The weather is still ok in the south, that is south of the Loire, in the north you get more damp mornings. Can't really help with the Atlantic coast, we tend to go down the east side at this time. Popular sites are still busy, but there are few families, mainly quiet couples (like us!). And as other sites are starting to close, sometimes you find there are just a few folk left.
I would make a list of campsites you might use and check they are open, we have struggled to find open ones later on in Sept. However the good news is that you can take full advantage of your ACSI discount card.
If you stay in aires, then you have plenty of cheaper choices. Municipals are not always cheaper than a site with ACSI discount, some of those are 11 or 13 euros per night. And with the ACSI book it is quite clear whether the site is open or not.
When I first retired, from working in education, we were able to go in September. We expected sites to be empty; got to a regular site and ask for a pitch: "Yes, we have four left!" Suddenly realised we were seeing the ACSI effect, when a snowbird migration happens, with all us pensioners getting the last of the summer wine and sunshine. We were the youngest on site, I'm sure. The pace of life is slower; everyone is even more ready for a chat. There's less around, but that's OK too.
We always go for a month in sept, the past few years have headed for Le Teday west of Bordeaux for the first week and have found it to be still hot and sunny when we have left around the 12th Sept. The bar is usually open until 16th but takeaway closes earlier. We then head south to The Languadoc and its usually good weather although was stormy for a few days last year. We went along to Collioure tyen back via Carcasonne, Le Paradis at St Leon sur Vezere then to Saumur for a boot full of wine and the weather was cooler as expected, in fact last year it felt more Autumnal than usual.
We go again on Sept 4th and intend to just head for the best weather wherever that may be. It is quieter at this time of year but thats how we like it. J x

Thank you for your replies. Yes we've said we will follow the sun if the weather is not so good. We're pretty resilient having camped in the van in the UK with frost on the ground! Might back an extra blanket which we don't normally need to do!
Are supermarkets in tourist places open on Sundays?
Hard to tell. Macon isn't. Chartres isn't.
We usually assume they won't be and shop on Saturday. You can almost always get bread though, even if you have to order it at the campsite. Or if you are travelling, you can get it at the motorway services, along with enough (expensive) food for a picnic.

Most, if not all, of the main supermarkets list their stores opening days & hours on their website. They usually are searchable on a map. eg SuperU Chinon
Some of the ACSI sites in September are quite busy, with some long term Brits there for May and June, then returning to the UK, going back to France in September. Certainly some at Nauzan Plage Royan, lovely weather can expected in September, in that area!
