We are thinking of a trip to Scandinavia next July and August with our motorhome. Just wondering if anyone has been recently and could comment on things like:
Would we need to book sites or could we just turn up?
Are mossies and midges a problem?
Are dogs generally welcome?
Is there any must-see places?
Any other comments ideas welcome. We are aware alcohol will be expensive!

No idea what it is like to drive my motorhome there but we have recently come back from a cruise to the Fjord in Norway and judging by the number of motorhomes we saw it is certainly very popular destination. The only problem, perhaps, is that it involves a lot of driving compared to elsewhere in Europe.
Hi lizzie, we did a long trip ( 7000 miles long!) to Scandinavia last year. We had an amazing time We didn't book anywhere - but then we never do. We stayed at some ACSI sites, but mostly we wild camped for free.
Have a look at our blog for some must -see places, but every where is fantastic.
Just click on 'My Homepage' above.
Before we went we added a 2nd leisure battery and changed to refillable gas, ready for long distances and wild camping. Enjoy!
I can say from painful experience that if you go to waterside places in Sweden (my experience is of the Stockholm area) you must be very prepared for the mozzies. They are as plentiful and every bit as vicious as their Scottish cousins - more so if anything. Take care.
The Scandinavian midge is as bad as the Scottish one.

Following our 2 earlier posts on this we are both normally very wary of Midges and Mozzies, they seem to come after us ! But in Norway last year, from Oslo to North Cape, and Sweden, we weren't really bothered by them. The only time was when we wild camped by the still section of a river in Early July on the way back. We went early May ( starting through France/ Holland/ Germany) and returned early July. That's the other consideration, with no direct ferries to Scandanavia it's a long initial drive, but we made this part of the trip. There is a ferry from Hirtshals in Denmark to Kristiansand in Norway which shortens the journey.
Hmmm thinking we should perhaps leave Scandinavia till i retire in 2-3 years and we can go outside school hols. And for longer. Insects do seem to like me - i got some really nasty bites (midges I think) in the Mosel region this year and five weeks on they are still itching! there seemed to be lots of small biting insects there but by contrast I wasn't bitten once on the Tarn 3 weeks later. I suppose insects are an occupational hazard for campers but they sure can spoil a holiday. I love the highlands of Scotland but wont go again in summer after being plagued a few years ago!
Hi lizzie , I lived in Sweden for 3 and a half years back in the eighties and a useful little tip that Swedes do with an itching mozzie bite is to get a lighted cigarette and hold it as near as you dare to the bite without burning yourself but stand as much heat off it as you can for about 20 to 30 seconds , after that it doesn't itch again , strange I know but it really does work one to watch out for is if they say something is only a mile beware because a Swedish mile is equivalent to 10 kilometres ! and one final heads up , if you are offered the chance to taste some surstromming DONT !!! just go on youtube and enter surstromming challenge and you will see what I mean anyway hope you get there someday and enjoy it, it is a beautiful country .
