Overall we found supermarket shopping to be slightly more expensive than last year but holiday treats like eating out, ice creams, coffees, etc were about the same.

This time last year you got 1.41€ for your £. Now you get 1.16.. Unless prices in France have fallen by 11% then the price you pay in the currency you earn will be higher.

The OP was talking like for like. If,in France, you paid €X for something last year, were you paying €X+ this year. The exchange rate was irrelevant

More 'the elephant in the room' than irrelevant. Inflation in France is minimal compared to the devaluation in the £

To be fair 1.41 was a blip, at that time, due to various other factors like Greece. It was more a time of buy currency in advance than this is here to stay!!. It was unsustainable and always due to fall downwards rapidly, which is exactly what it did. Even prior to the referendum, it was and had been for some time, trading in the 1.24 to 1.29 range, which is probably its natural level against the Euro.

I havn't a clue what we paid for a baguette whilst in France - I am on holiday so don't get too concerned - I am going to have the bread regardless.
Yep, we are on par with currency rates a few years ago...
Still enjoying the holiday we saved up for.
