Hi All
Slightly different post than the title implies - We have just returned from three weeks in France and I just wanted to say thanks for all the great advice I have read/received on this forum. A few thoughts from a first timer:
The tunnel is super easy - booked early via the C&CC and got a good discount on early morning weekday departure/late night weekday return.
The toll tags are sooo worth getting - I got the SANEF one (I know its not the cheapest but was very easy to setup) and it was brilliant. We felt very smug as we beat the queues and got beeped through, although I am slightly dreading finding out how much the tolls cost us.
Driving in France is as easy as people say...the roads are generally quiet, very well maintained and ideally suited to cruising long distances in a 20yr old campervan.
I used Revolut to get an FX card for all card payments and cash withdrawals. Other products are available but their app was brilliant for keeping track of spending and topping up the card was very straightforward. I was impressed and I haven't seen this card mentioned here before.
Thanks for the pointers to ADAC -we joined but luckily didn't have to use them. Met another British camper in the Loire who was driving a VW T2 which had seen better days and who had no breakdown cover He joined them from the campsite once he had read the comments on here!
Are Mondays the new Sundays in France? We were in the Loire and the Dordogne and Mondays were really quiet in both areas..
France didn't feel any cheaper than the UK but the food and wine was amazing - we loved wandering the markets and the supermarkets.
We also spent two nights in Paris on the way back. We had to stay in a hotel on the edge of Paris because of a new LEZ that kept the Bongo out of central Paris but the metro was easy and the sites were amazing. Lots of very visible security but we felt perfectly safe...don't be put off if at all possible.
I may add to this as I remember things but thanks again and happy travels...I'm off to sign up for French classes.
B
