We have just got back from Le Logis du Brueil, St Augustin which is just a few miles inland from St Palais Sur Mare. We went with daughters, son in law and 3 grandchildren aged 2-6. The campsite has a lovely new swimming pool with slides & lazy river, a good playground and 3 large well appointed wash blocks each with family rooms. The beaches in the area are lovely and we took our dog who also had a great lime. Reception are very helpful and arranged the visit to a local vet who was reasonably priced. There is a good zoo nearby and loads of places to visit.
For us, using the Eurotunnel is a no brainer. The overall journey time is shorter, we stay with our dog on the tunnel and we offset the cost using Tesco 3 for £1 voucher.

You can always get a Portsmouth/Caen crossing during daylight hours - saving on cabin costs. We used the Sunday afternoon crossing, when caravans go free - and then back on the 8.30 am crossing from Caen. Cheaper in both directions.
Thanks for all your ideas everyone and offers of voucher codes. I'll definitely look into all your recommendations. We live near Leeds so need an overnight as its such a long way. We gave the caen ferry a go because we figured it would count as our overnight. Maybe if we took our own pillows it might be more comfortable.
Going to keep on researching options - i know its not until next year but i'm desperate to get there!!!
The Roscoffe overnight is lovely. Almost like a cruise. By the time you have eaten and maybe watched a film in the cinema the beds are really comfy and you are there!

We live in West Yorkshire too, but don't 'do' the Portsmouth crossings any more after nearly missing our sailing on both the times we went that way, due to traffic, breakdowns (not us), and a race meeting at Silverstone!
If you are a member of the Caravan Club or the Camping and Caravanning Club then you can get a big reduction in ferry costs if you combine the ferry with a package of a site, or Camping Cheques. This applies to some of the longer western crossings. It can bring down the cost considerably. For example (and it's only an example, if the Brittany Ferries crossing costs £500 then if you buy it with a site or Camping Cheques costing another £100 - then the total cost can come down to £300 instead of £600!!! It doesn't make sense, but that's how it works providing your dates and times qualify for the discounts. Others on here take advantage of this and save considerable amounts of money. If you want a real dates/time comparison I'd be happy to look for you, if you're not a member.

Stayed at yelloh St emillion which is one of if not the best site I've stayed at, St emillion itself very touristy, but worth a visit, our 8 year old enjoyed cite du vin.
But I did struggle to find non wine based activities in the area, it's literally miles and miles of vineyards, which are pretty to look at and means you can see green for miles, even had road bridges to cross vineyards, we visited a few local ones...
Lovely place worth a visit but I would say not the best area for younger ones, but the site kept them more than entertained.
Next time I plan to keep going till I hit Perpignan......
Sorry to say we didn't particularly like the St Emillion Yelloh ... very much a 'cabine' site ... moved to a nearby municipal after two nights ... which we found a lot better ...
St Emillion itself is great to visit ... eat in the main square ... lovely village.
A much recommend site in the Bordeaux area is Le Tedey ... have a look at reviews on here.
We are currently on Le Teday and it is paradise. The weather is around 30c during the day. We also live near Leeds. We travelled down during the day crossed on Le Shuttle at about 6pm and drove along the motorway to Aire le la Baie de Somme where we ate in the van then slept until 4am. We then went via Rouen and off toll to just south of Tours when we hit the motorway again all the way to Bordeaux. The site is actually 26 miles away. We arrived at 3.30pm and had 2 picnic stops en route. It was a long day but worth it to get here a day early as we had planned a stop near poitiers. Enjoy your planning. This is a lovely area. J x
If you end up heading to the top of the Gironde peninsula around Soulac-sur-Mer, a lot of locals take the short ferry from Royan to Pointe De Grave which cuts off about 150km from the drive plus the need to negotiate Bordeaux, although it likely isn't much quicker once you queue for the ferry. It's about 50 euro with a caravan (25 euro for just a car), probably similar to the cost of tolls and petrol via Bordeaux.
Le Tedey is and has been favourite for many years. 8 times in 17yrs is good going. Fabulous place to use as a base.
If you cycle there is a 100k of cycling pistes.
(There is now a Carrefour in Moutchic, so no need to trek out towards Bordeaux. Bad news for local shops but there are laws regarding the requirement for a bakery in France...so unlike England villages survive).
St Emilion is a great day out, Bordeaux is wonderful. The vineyards of the Medoc are fab.

Favourite site:
Camping Nanzel, Limone, Lake
Garda..perfect for MTB, Kayak, SUP and fell running training.
Favourite areas: Provence, French Alps, Savigny (as a stop over for Southern France: Rhein valley as a stop over for Italy. 78
ANOTHER vote for Le Tedey! It's just such a lovely position on the lake. We were there in mid May this year and I reckon there were about 20 other campers. Almost deserted.
Unusually it's a brilliant site if you've got a tent. So often one can feel a poor relation in terms of pitches but at Le Tedey there are loads of splendid pitches ideal for tents. Because it was so quiet we had a lakeside pitch. Very blessed.
The only thing I can remember that got on my nerves were the sleeping policemen.

Just to reinforce what someone else said, the beaches around Biarritz are VERY dangerous. We saw someone drown there a couple of years ago. Very rough seas (Bay of Biscay) and very strong undercurrent.
We like Camping Le Bilos near Salles south of Bordeaux. We use it for an overnight stop. Very friendly, cheap, very peaceful and good bathroom facilities - we don't use EHU for 1 night.
Bordeaux area would combine well with the Pyrenees and even a short trip over to th Spanish side of the Pyrenees. Beautiful area.
