One of my all time favourite cities is Hamburg. Not an obvious tourist spot, but packed with great places to visit (Minatur Wunderland is worth the trip by itself) and great shopping. V.Good campsite (near Ikea) with transport into city centre.
Further south, visit Hamelin. Lovely town with good campsite. The "Pied Piper" is re-enacted every Sunday in summer.
