Do you know any?
Thought we might try Catalonia next summer having not really enjoyed Agde area this year.
I discounted Spanish sites last year as all the ones I liked (L'Amfora and the like) seem to be massive.
We have always stuck to around <400 pitches so the kids can roam freely without being too far away or getting lost and secondly as we don't like noisy nights, discos etc which seem to go with the bigger sites.

We have stayed at L'Amfora and Mas Nou. Strangely, by the use of abundant hedging neither seems larger than many French 200 place sites

Thanks. Got very close to booking L'Amfora for this year. Might just go for it.

I would have said the same - we have stayed (twice) at L'Amfora on the area to the far side of the swimming pool, between the main site roads and the boundary - and thought it seemed like a little oasis. Mind you, both times were low season, and I know how very different sites can be in peak season. I have no idea how noisy it is during high season, but perhaps if you go at the very beginning or towards the very end of the holiday period (presuming you have to go in school holidays) things may quieten down.

Thanks. Is there plenty of cycling in the area?

I guess big sites are all different and we need to give it a try as some may not be what we expect.

Yes, the area around the site is flattish - and you can cycle along to various other little places along the coast.

There is a lovely nature reserve at Aguamolls, if you like birds. We had one of the most fantastic days spotting wildlife there. The Greek/Roman remains at Empuries are good too - a Greek jetty out in the sea, and part Roman/part Greek village up the hill. There are some lovely coves along that part of the coast, and St Martin de Empuries is a nice (small) village. You're near enough to the Bay of Roses, so can cycle there for miles around the bay.

I would say to get a 'small' feel, then you would be better choosing a pitch on the outer perimeter of the site. The 'cross' rows in the middle, I think, can feel a bit hemmed in. The nicest sanitary block is the one on the southern boundary of the site, new and sparkling with very good quality fixtures and fittings. On the 'plan' of the campsite it's at the top of the page, and I think the best pitches are those in the top right hand corner as you look at the map.

We stayed at Camping Las Dunas and although we were concerned about the size (1500 pitches) it doesn't feel that big at all. Because it's zoned you tend to stay put unless going to the pool, beach etc. My children played around our 'L' zone which gave them 10-15 rows of pitches to feel free but close enough for the odd bike fall.
They even felt confident enough to come back from the kids club, 5-10 minute walk from the pitch.

Thanks will have a look at that one too.
I think as the kids get bigger they will prefer a bigger site but if we can retain a bit of a smaller feel everyone will be happy.

We are on Camping Playa Bara south of Barcelona. It is a terraced campsite set in a botanical garden. It is fabulous but as we are here out of season and there is a special rate for retired people, I don't know how prices would compare to other sites. You could stay on the site for the whole of your holiday if you were that way inclined as there is everything you could possibly need including a hairdresser. The beach is just outside the back gate but there is a large pool complex. The site is big but because of its layout, it doesn't feel that way. This is our 3rd year here but we have met the same people each year who have been coming for many, many years. Their website is barpark.es. Buses run from outside the campsite to Taragona and you can get a train from the next town to Barcelona.
