Argentat is a pleasant small riverside town, some lovely flower baskets along the riverside, and some mediaeval houses. The Tours de Merle, nearby, are worth a visit. You could certainly cycle into the town, on reasonably level roads, for a meal and there are some nice restaurants.

Any reason why this particular site? We've driven past it when we stayed nearby, but no more than that. The site is on an 'extension' of the upper part of the Dordogne, the quieter part, where there are some barrages for hydro-electrics, but it's not 'industrial' and the scenery is very pleasant.

Added later: the site scores 8 on the Dutch review site, and 8.1 on the main ACSI website. It may be worth your reading these reviews as some mention a lot of noise in high season. There are no reviews in English since 2013. It seems to be a site frequented by the Dutch. From here onwards are the only two reviews in English:

1. Wonderful location, very friendly and helpful staff, modern sanitary facilities always spotlessly clean and a fabulous swimming pool open in the low season. Only downside was rather iffy wifi connection, although it was free. We will be back!

2. We have visited this site three times in the last ten years-its position is just magnificent, in fact we have a large poster of it in a frame in our house to remind us of how beautiful it is.The pitches are a good size, some of them are riverside and as the Dordogne is controlled by a barrage just downstream it is essentially a lake, safe for swimming and boating ( canoes available )

Evening entertainment on the terrace of the Chateau is a very pleasant experience and the food in the restaurant within the Chateau is good. The surrounding area is quite good for cycling as there is a quiet road on the opposite side of the river (cross over the barrage to get there.)

We have no hesitation in recommending this site, but we have no experience of the situation at the height of the season as we have only visited in June/July.

It's a lovely site but can be very busy during mid July to Mid August. Food at the Chateau is very good and there is also a take away facility. The staff are very helpful, the on-site shop has most food and drink items you would need and also has fresh bread every morning. Canoes, kyaks and pedalos are available for hire so you can explore the river which is beautiful. Shower facilities are good and kept very clean. The local town of Argentat is worth visiting as is Brive. There is a weekly day and night market which are excellent. All in all I would recommend it.

Thanks for the responses, very helpful.
The reason we are looking at is because some friends we made this year are going there next year and recommended it. Also it seems to tick the box for us if the town is nearby without the need to drive. I drive a lot and just don't want to drive so much when I'm on holiday.
Also the mil is joining us and can stay on the site in a mobile home. It appears near enough to all the things her and her partner wanted to see too.

We are going the last two weeks over August so should be a little quieter in the surroundings areas.

Val I think you should perhaps write a guide book on France.
