Well, it won't be caravanning but an apartment for my big 70 next year. Has anyone been? need to know the best places to go to (beaches, scenery, old ruins etc, not museums/galleries). Not hours from the airport as we will be hiring a car. What are costs like?

Interested in this. Couldn't quite make flights etc work but we were looking seriously.
It was actually Gino D'Acampo got us looking, on one of his shows. All the Godfather stuff. He went to the cafe owned by Apollonia's dad in the film.
Be interested in what you do.

We've been, a few years back, and loved it. We looked at the package trips available, then booked our own hotels on a similar route using a hire car. Lots of ancient monuments to see, lovely seaside towns, Mount Etna, which we went up and it erupted 2 weeks later!
We flew in and out of Catania, but think you could fly into, say Catania, then drive across to Palermo and fly back from there.
The driving in the cities is only for the brave, which my OH did.

We went about 12 years ago on a package deal to Cefalu? in the north. Really enjoyed the Island. The people see it as a separate country and talk about going to Italy.
Very hot in summer months , make sure your hire car air con works. Etna well worth it and some really ancient temples in the south nr Gela. Taormina ok if a bit touristy.
Watch out for petty crime, and muggings. My wifes cousin who is married to a Sicillian ( they live in Lancashire) was mugged in Syracuse when she popped out to buy some milk one evening. So be aware. Hope you have a great trip

Be careful with the car hire, The firm I used deducted £45 from my credit card for an admin fee to provide my details to the authorities concerning a traffic violation. When I asked for documented proof of the violation, they told me they could not supply it due to data protection legislation. I instructed my card provider to reclaim the money and have heard nothing more from the hire company since.

We went last autumn to Taormina which was lovely. The weather was very pleasant for the first half of the week then a bIg storm came along so next 3 days were definitely not beach wather. We took a coach trip to Syracuse - lovely with Roman ruins and lovely church and town. Lovely beach called Isola Bella I think at the bottom of the cable car next to Taormina.

Yes it was a package. I saw it on a Citalia website and then about £300 cheaper on travel republic so snapped it up. We stayed at the Excelsior Palace which has a fab pool and wonderful location as it is in the town but on the edge. I would describe it as having a sort of faded grandeur but we really like it. The breakfast was pretty good and the bar and reception good. The views from the pool and size of pool were outstanding. You can book lots of trips from travel agents in town. We would have done the volcano but were leaving it for the second half of the week but because the weather changed, there would have been no view so we didnt bother.
