We've noticed over our last few ferry trips an increasing trend for car drivers to turn on their hazard warning lights when in the queue to board the ferry and when driving onto the ferry. We can't work out why people do this - it's not like they've stopped unexpectedly and others need to avoid them; surely everybody is going the same way to the same place! Can someone please explain?

It's usually to alert the loading crew that a driver or passenger has mobility problems so needs to park as close as possible to the lifts.

That is correct but in true british fahion when one car puts them on lots of others following also put theirs on becausethey think it's the right procedure.

If it's P&O then the hazard flashers will have paid an extra £10 for priority disembarkation. They have a mirror hanger marked 'priorité' but are required to put on hazard lights in order to indicate to loaders they need to be parked at front doors.

Yes, it is people with disability who are instructed to do so.

It is certainly not an increasing "trend" as you put it, it has been the case for some time now. So no, not everyone is going to the same place, people with mobility issues are parked as close to the lift as possible, and the ferry companies do a great job in ensuring that is the case.

When we use the tunnel because we've got a trailer behind the pick up but you can't see it from the front we're told to put our hazards on so the person loading the carriages knows we're a longer vehicle than we look.

Many thanks for answering my question. We've been travelling with Brittany Ferries recently when the use of hazard lights has come to our attention. I think perhaps saxo1 may have a point about others copying, as on our most recent trip all but 1 car in one of the rows had their lights going.

If you see it on a truck on a ferry it is because it requires an electrical hook up to run the fridge unit on the trailer and hazards on signals to the crew that you need a hook up

I have to do this because I have a mobility problem. Although I no longer have a blue badge, (I sent it back in February, YAY!), I do struggle on stairs or a rolling boat, so the ferry companies prefer me to put the hazards on so that I can park near the car deck exit & use the lift.
When they wave us to a waiting to load lane, we notice that all the mobility people are put into the same waiting lane, then, as the car park deck fills and the few spaces near the exit are there, a few of us get waved on. The next lot of us wait for the next car deck to load, and so on.
It isn't a very subtle way of doing it. When I was in a wheelchair, the last thing I'd have wanted was flashing lights attached to me.
