Hi,
Does anyone know of a caravan engineer in the Deux Sevres region of France. We have a problem with our caravan but we are struggling to find somebody who will look at it over here.
Many Thanks

There is a mobile engineer, Euro Caravan Services who services our caravan. He covers many areas of France - but does a sort of 'round' so he might be able to look at your caravan whilst on one of these rounds.

I have a feeling they live in France somewhere. His wife deals with emails and they are both very helpful. There is a 'Contact Us' button on the website.

Sorry, started posting, got distracted, came back to it, and see Jaiash has beaten me to it with the mobile engineer. So here's another link where they sell caravans in the Deux Sevres Loisirs and they may know of an engineer who will service your caravan.

Google throws up the name of Dennis Quinton, who is between Bressuire and Thouars, and gives a home and a mobile number for him. Worth a try?

We went to move it yesterday and when my husband undid the battery box, the battery was red hot and their was an awful burning smell both near the battery and in the caravan.
We contacted Swift and they have stated it could be either the battery or the inbuilt battery charger could be faulty as it didn't turn off once the battery was charged.
Once the battery was disconnected and moved well away from the van my husband tested it and it was reading over 13 volts. Hence we need a caravan engineer to have a look at it.
Incidentally the caravan is 3 years old and the battery was a new 120 leisure battery that we bought last December.

It sounds like a failed transformer/charger. This is a fairly standard item also fitted to French caravans so any caravan workshop or even competant auto electrician can fit a new one.

To avoid getting ripped off, new part should cost no more than £150 at most & 2hrs would be reasonable fitting time so bill should be under £300. If you need a new 110a/h leisure battery this should cost under £100. If fully charged battery is still reading 12.5v disconnected after a few days then battery will be ok.

Decent 110a battery is over £100, last time I saw them they were £130-£150.

Re quote from Berriow

Here's the last email I got from Dennis.

Pity - nice guy and very reasonable to deal with.

" Hi Eddie, yes I have been on holiday, but I am sorry, but I am now retired, due to ill health.

Kind regards

Dennis"

Thank u for your responses.
Here is an update. We spoke to Sargent who make the charger and they told us how to check the charger, we basically put a new battery in and the charger light when to red, then went into float mode and the light changed to green, so they say the charger on the caravan is working. We then spoke to the battery people as the battery is under guarantee and they asked us for the battery reading which we took after it had cooled down ( it was so hot it took 36 hours to cool down ) the battery reading 7 days after the incident was 13.2 so they say the battery is fine
. Basically we r now stumped. Has anyone got any ideas what it could be as I am too frightened to use the caravan now.

Are you using caravan permanently plugged into ehu? 12v circuit should work ok without a battery. Is there a switch on charger marked '3 stage' & 'float'? If there is switch it to float & it should work ok without battery. try that. Worst that will happen is that fuse will blow when 12v, ie lights are used but it should work ok if charger is ok.
