Hi Everyone,

I'm seeking advice on a trip to Austria that we're planning for next year.

Nattersee seems to be a well favoured site (although no English version of the web site - unless I'm missing something !).

We'd prefer to travel from Calais through Belgium/Germany rather than France (just for a change, and trying to avoid toll charges) so I'm asking for route and stopover advice in both directions, preferably with different routes out and back.

It's not that we're tight, it just that OH hates hanging out of the window trying to pay toll charges !

We both prefer sites that are relatively close to towns of interest that are either walkable or close enough to use bikes or public transport

How long have you got? We stopped at Bruges, Brussels, Luxembourg, Metz, Nancy, Colmar, Lake Constance, St Anton etc ...all toll free, all interesting places to visit, and all with reasonable campsites.

Can't help with campsites, I'm afraid.
But we motorcycled through Germany to Austria this year.
Germany could probably win prizes for congestion on motorways. Its especially bad around major cities. We got stuck for over an hour south of Munich.
You will need a vignette if you use Austrian motorways. But you can buy them for quite short periods unlike Switzerland where they are annual.
If you are near (or even if you aren't) drive up the Grossglockener alpine Road. It will blow your mind.

We're looking at around 14 or 16 days, so it's quite a trip in that time but we went to Italy in 2015 for the same period of time and it worked well for us.

We prefer to get there quickly and take a leisurely route back.

We went to Grubhof last year. That really is an excellent site in an outstanding area and withing walking distance of a town.

Instead of crossing at Calais, have you thought about Harwich to Hook of Holland? Very nice ferry with pretty good deals I found. It also avoids those pesky tolls.

Sure. But what in particular do you want to know about the route?

We never got all the way to Natterersee so didn't try to give a route beyond entering Austria at Bregenz at the eastern end of Lake Constance - and then we went on through the Arlberg tunnel from there. But it's been closed for repairs recently so will it be open again in 2017?

We have sidetracked from Austria at Landeck to look into Switzerland and explored up the Engadine as far as St Moritz, then crossed back into Italy and up the Resia Pass to go walking in the hills from a campsite at Mals. We just stop like Motorhome owners do when we are in an area we like rather than actively picking campsites that we want to visit. The scenery, the mountains and the walking were what we went for. But there are no bad campsites in the Alps, are there!

The arlberg tunnel is open we used it in June this year. Went down though Belgium, Germany, Austria back to Black Forest and then France. We crossed Dover to Dunkirk.

Berriow - stopping where you fancy sounds lovely. Did you go in July and August? We would like to just wander. A rough plan was: through france to Italian Lakes, Slovena, Austria. We may go into Switzerland so will get a vignette for there and Austria. if that all sounds possible we would prefer not to book.

Lizzie, Sites on lake shores are always the busy ones, and we avoided them for that reason. But otherwise yes, we crisscrossed the Alps (Austria, Italy, France and Switzerland) in July and August for many years without bookings and without problems. And with a Motorhome you will surely be more flexible than we were with a caravan.

And as you mention Switzerland look at the website for Camping Eigernordwand at Grindelwald - in the most stunning scenery in the heart of the mountains. It still says that they don't take summer bookings and that anyone who arrives by 3pm will always be fitted in, even in July and August. Lots of other sites in mountain villages will fit you in too - and if in doubt phone the day before. Good wishes.

Have to agree with Paulgill1 Nattersee is a wonderful site and along with the free bus into Insbruk there is a daily bus out into the hinterland with guides to take you on some wonderful walks. All free!
