How does the pre uk return vet visit from the mainland work if I only plan on being over for 2 nights top? Reading the rules it looks like i have a 4 day window that doesn't require a vet visit to return or am I reading it wrong? It seems silly to me if I take my dog over for a day and he needs to see a vet in france.

If you are going on a short trip you can have the "Return Check" carried out by a UK vet before you go.
Someone mentioned recently on here, that is the way to go.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

As is said above, no problem. I have known people taking their dogs to France for the weekend who simply see their own vet before they go. Their vet then signs the relevant bits of the pet passport and there is no need to visit a vet in France.

You must see a vet before returning to the uk
more than 24 hours but less than 4 days I think.
Easy to do, just go for it very easy process.
If you don't get a Vet to administer the Tapeworm treatment, stamp and date the Pet Passport correctly in either the UK or France the dog will not be allowed back to the UK until the process is done to the satisfaction of the Pet Passport officers in France.
The Rabies treatment should also be up-to-date or the animal will not be allowed to return for 21 days after getting the Rabies treatment.
It may seem silly to you but Defra sets the rules and we have to abide by them.
The time allowed for the Pet Passport treatment is between 24 hours and 120 hours (1 – 5 days) before your arrival time back in the UK shown on your travel documents.
At around £18 each way across the Channel and about £30 – £40 for the Vet wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to leave the dog with friends, relatives or in kennels?

No friends or relatives here so it would be a kennel which we are loath to do. Besides, we just bought a new car and outfitted it solely with the intentions of bringing the dogs with us camping.
I agree with you that taking the dog with you is a good idea, we would never leave our dog at home, but it will be expensive just for a night or two in France.
If you have more than one dog then you aren't going to get much change out of a £100, possibly more, for such a short holiday.
It's not the money that is an issue, it's that I don't want to subject them to all the continued vet visits. We also figure in the cost of them when vacationing. We just took them on the qm2 with us and they actually cost more than we did but it was worth it.
