Just doing some research on Austria and came across this suggested route. Has anyone done this route? Any suggestions for campsites?

We went thru Luxembourg and Germany and ended up in Natersee which is a great site with organised walks, fishing, and daily trips into Innsbruck- all free! I and I know others, will highly recommend this site.
When travelling the route, there are plenty of sites to choose from with many with comments from people here. Your choice

The actual road is nothing special. Its the historic towns along it that are worth the trip.
Here's an excellent site

Clarification:

The famous 'Romantic Route' is in Germany, it ends close to the border ... so do you mean, driving down that and then crossing into Austria ...

Or ....

Is there another 'Romantic Route' in Austria??

No the Romantische Strasse is not in Austria it finishes at Fussen 3 miles before the Austrian Border and starts at Wurzberg both in Germany. When we first did the Strasse over 35 years ago it passed right through the centre of all the lovely towns and was a delight to travel on and it stil is today. Now what folks call the Romantische Strasse is the Motorway running parallel with the old road.

History of the Strasse

I know about the German route but was reading about Austria on a website - perhaps it is just a cheeky marketing ploy but the site talked of the romantic road in Austria from Salzburg to Vienna. I don't know how to put links in using the ipad but if you google this a site comes up with maps etc.

Hi Lizzie this is the link to the Austrian Romantik Road I do not think it is anything as interesting as the German one it would be a beautiful trip but not
sure if it would be suitable for a caravan.

Hmmm I think we will have to look into sensible routes for the motorhome and places to avoid. Halstatt is somewhere we have seen photos of and would like to visit so hope that would be ok. Is there anywhere in particular on this route yu would avoid Di?

As has been said already, dependent on the size of your MH you might want to adjust the route a bit - the region is quite mountainous. However, I saw huge vans parked at the top of the Grossglockner mountain road, 2.5km in the sky up a mountain pass, so seems it doesn't put off Austrians, who love their motorhoming!

Nearby to the start of the Romantikstrasse, just over the border in Germany, is Berchtesgadener Land. There you'll find the town of Koenigssee, which I wouldn't miss out on if you have time. An unbelievably beautiful location with a picturesque town, and overlooked by Eagle's Nest which you can visit. Besides its ominious history, it's also one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen.

If you're interested in history (as you'll guess I am so that's a lot of my recommendations!), Bad Aussee has a fascinating one. The region is called Salzkammergut, after the salt chambers around there. It's also known as the Austrian lake district. The area was beloved by the Habsburg monarchy, and there's quite the number of sites and reminders around of Franz Joseph and his wife, Sisi. Salzkammergut was the summer retreat for Vienna's rich, and by the early 20th century Bad Aussee was the number one spot for Vienna's middle class Jewish population. It became a prime target of the Nazis to "rearyanise". You can read more about that here: http://www.politische-landschaft.at/en/workshop/anschluss-verfolgung-und-arisierung-im-ausseerland/

The town of Bad Ischl is particularly lovely, and like Bad Aussee was a summer retreat for Vienna's elite. It was called "Vienna by the lakes" in the summer. The Kaiservilla is worth a visit if you're interested in the Habsburgs at all, and also see the desk where Franz Joseph signed the declaration of war against Serbia that started World War I, and preserved there in glass, the declaration itself.

If you do go to Bad Ischl, also visit Cafe Sissy for Zauner cake.

Vienna and Salzburg go without saying, both wonderful cities.

Your trip sounds delightful, I'm really quite jealous. I don't know when you're planning to go, but the shoulder months, particularly the end of May, is often a great time to take the benefit of good weather and fewer visitors.

Our motorhome Is 3.5 and we will be setting off from the uk on the 6th of July and have until mid August. we have no choice when we go - school holidays.
Your ideas sound great Ironkerton. I am not too keen on doing any very hairy mountain roadsin the motorhome - the down is more worrying for the brakes I think. So minimising high routes would probably be best!
Di, your ideas and routes were a great help last year so any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

+ 1 for the Grossglockener. We were there last year on the motorbike. Followed coaches and m/homes to the top.
The road is wide and very well surfaced. The drive of a lifetime. There is a toll, but you can spend all daydriving up, down and around.
