Its a great destination for a family holiday for sure.
This site has lots about things to do and see here
We also have only stayed at Munstertal campsite and will be going back again next year. It is a 5* campsite in every sense although won;t have the flumes and slides if you want that sort of site, but very nice indoor and outdoor pools overlooking the mountain with spa, restaurant with bar, shop, large play areas, mini golf, tennis, 5 a side pitch, fishing lake etc etc.
The facilities in showers etc are some of best anywhere we have seen.
Highlights of area are certainly Europa Park as mentioned, allow two to three days here, probably best single park in Europe if not anywhere for everyone to enjoy.
Rodelbahns coming down side of mountain on a toboggan are a must visit as are the larger mountains like Belchen on the cable car or hiking or cycling if very fit!
Loads of other stuff to do in BF itself or trip over into France or Switzerland of course as so close
Where we stay you can cycle either way on flat cycle lanes and pop into a nearby town for a kaffee and kuchen or one fo the many local beers or wines. Its a nice clean, relaxed place that we really enjoy visiting now.
Different to much of france for sure, not better but different.
The site we stay is certainly cheaper than any equivalent 5* site we have found in France I would say, not sure thats the case everywhere though
If travelling down from Calais go via Belgium, Lux and into Germany tat way for similar time but reduced or no french tolls.
have fun planning!
