Hi,

I've done a search on Ile d'Oleron and all the posts are 10 years old, so hoping to get an updated view.

We've explored much of the west coast of France, Ile d'Oleron and Royan is the one area left!

We might take the tent or we might rent a mobile home, but I'm looking for site recommendations please with the criteria:
1. Walking distance to a sandy beach.
2. Pool on site, kids like a slide.
3. Not bothered with evening entertainment etc, prefer quiet evenings with simple table tennis and volleyball facilities.

Thanks.

i still haven't got around to posting our reviews from last summer!

We have stayed at the Indigo les pins site on the south end of the island twice now, but wont be back again. Its now a Hutopia by the way.

its great for the beach if you don't mind taking the car. its about a 20 minute bike ride, but not really walking distance if you are in Sherpa-mode with beach gear.

When we went in 2015, there was a good choice of some fantastic pitches, with a choice of shade or sun, big and small pitches. Sadly in 2016, these had all been turned in to permanent 'tent' pitches, so there was little space for us with the caravan as they now only have small pitches for tourers. We couldn't even put the awning up!

So really this doesn't meet your criteria, but might help rule it out. No slide on the pools, and by the way, they are very cold.

I have stayed at Domaine Doleron....very european, lots of Dutch French and British. Very clean campsite, nice pool with a couple of slides. Cycle to beach shops etc
No entertainment or shop which is why i liked it, very uncommercialized. My review is on here

Astronaut, your wish list sounds like Camping Le Suroit to me.

We've just booked Le Suroit - it sounds lovely on paper, he location is excellent and the photos look good, and the reception staff are very helpful and have an excellent sense of humour, which bodes well somehow 😀

One point about Ile d'Orelon, some people mention the traffic jams for the bridge at the weekends in August. Is it a real problem, like will it take hours?

We never had a problem, but once you are on the island there is no real need to come off again. Much worse on Ile De Re

Never had a problem getting on to the island, but have seen the queues trying to get off, Sunday afternoons seem the worst. Lots of second home owners on the island, or weekenders, its probably not so bad if you leave in the morning, rather than hang on for the very last moment of sunshine.

Hi ,
We have been to the Ile D'oleron a few times and love it, However, you mention sandy beaches - The shoreline and shallows on the ile d'oleron can be very seaweedy and some of the beaches quite rocky.
If you want excellent cycling and a laid back quiet vibe the Ile D'operon is perfect. If a sandy beach is the most important factor I would look at Royan or more especially it's sister resort of St George de Didonne. Unfortunately I cant recommend any campsites from personal experience but the resort has a fantastic beach and promenade lined with Mulberry trees from which you can pluck the fruit. We were there for the 2nd 2 weeks of July last year and the beach always had plenty of space.

Thanks for these recommendations. Yes beach is very important for us, we like to be within walking distance and we opt for west coast rather than south in order to get the waves for bodyboarding.
St George de Didonne sound promising, I'm off to search for a site. Mrs A wants a 3 bed mobile home rather than the tent.

How important are the waves? The further into the Gironde estuary you go, the calmer the sea can be along that stretch of coast south of Royan, where you find St George de Didonne. Perhaps have a look at Camping Le Cote Sauvage which is within walking distance of decent surf, where the beach is lifeguarded in the summer. It is north of La Palmyre, between Royan and Oleron.

Perharps it's a little late, but no, St Georges de Didonne is not an good idea for surf. And in Oléron there are many very good sandy beaches ! F ex in St trojan, but also in Boyard ville.
