Camping L Escala v Camping Cadaques Which to choose?
Off to the Costa Brava in April, 2 two crinklies and a overweight pooch that snores.
Anyone been to these sites? Appreciate your feedback.

Are you going over Easter? If not, do you absolutely need to choose? Why not arrive at the first one, make a judgement about whether you like it, and if not carry on to the second and stay there - or even one of the very many other sites in that area. In April (except for the Easter weekend in Spain) it's likely to be quiet, or very quiet.

If you google Camping Cadaques and read Alan Rogers report on it,I think you will prefer to give Camping L'Escala a try.

As well as Easter weekend itself, the week before Easter, known in Spanish as Semana Santa, is also very busy - booking in advance advised.

I haven't been to either of the camp sites you mention, but Camping Cadaques gets some pretty negative reviews. However, as a location Cadaques is lovely - still relatively unspoiled, lots of little alleyways with nice shops, bars and restaurants, and a must-see if you're interested in Dali - his house in Port Ligat is an easy walk from Cadaques, which featured in many of his paintings. L'Escala is more built up and less picturesque but still pleasant, and the extensive Roman ruins at L'Empurias are interesting. However the weather in April can be very changeable - we experienced everything from torrential rain to hot sunshine!

We were here in September a couple of years ago. The site is split on two sides of the road, we went on the right hand side which was flat, the left from memory was up hill with the swimming pool being at the top, another small pool on our side was next to the bar area. Pitches are marked at ground level, a bit close to the neighbours but that seems to be the nature of Spanish sites we have found and sandy underfoot good for the ants! Good position with a flat walk to the beach, small supermarketshops, restaurants and bars. We didn't use the onsite bar/restaurant other than for our 'welcome' drink and tapas. Toilet block seemed okay at all times used. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The trip back to town is quite hilly, a bit rollercoaster like for us on our bikes (we have a MH) but if you have a car no problem. There was a very large market along the bay side on a Sunday when we were there and from the town the cycle/walk way to the roman ruins is fairly easy. We were returning last year but decided to give an ACSI site at L'Estartit a try and for us that was a better option, flatter with routes for cycling and walking, straight out to the beach and town. We haven't done Cadaques either, but gave an ACSI site at Roses a miss as it was too 'cosy' for us. L Escala is a site we would return to.

Just looked at the prices

2 people+unit+car+ehu...€29.55 (Cadaques) v €24.75 (L'Escala). This in low season!

Just up the coast is l'Amfora. €16 using Camping Cheque

We are going to dodge the bullet known as Easter. Looks like the vote goes for L Escala, must admit we did not check the prices. Might start to look at ACSI site now, back to the drawing board.

Or free for us for five days, thanks to the lovely person who has just given me five Camping Cheques - thank you very much Paul!

Obviously Stuart and I think alike - if we like the look of a site we check out the price, and if it's high see if there is an ACSI or Camping Cheques site nearby which offers a discount for our planned dates. L'Amfora is a big site, but we had a pitch adjacent to the woodland edge at the back of the site, in a very quiet and peaceful area - and the newest sanitary block there is absolutely excellent.

There are plenty of ACSI sites in the area - though none at Cadaques itself.

EdJan I think you're talking about Il mateau camping resort which is also in L'escala but on the other side of the town.
We too stayed there in May and loved it.
We stayed in the wooded part, up the hill which was empty but lovely and quiet which then came to life at the weekends when the Barcelonians arrived.
The large pool at the top only opened as we left late May. Most people tended to prefer the flat side of the site near the smaller pool.
We had the best Paella in the camp restaurant - very reasonably priced.
The beach is beautiful and there are lots of great walks in the area. If you walk up to the folly on the top of the hill, the views are superb.
You can cycle or walk into L'escala and also to the Roman ruins.
There are some very pretty medieval villages you can drive to locally.
I think in April it will be quiet and the weather will be changeable but we can highly recommend the site, Il mateau. We will be returning in September.
