I was in The Netherlands camping. I set up my tent right in front of the pitch number 15, assuming that was the centre point of the pitch site. My immediate neigbours at site 16 later complained and said I has set up my tent too close to them.
As it turns out they has placed their campervan to the left of the pitch number 16 very close to middle of my pitch number 15.

Question: Is the pitch number generally accepted as the middle of the pitch or what?

It depends on the site,

Yes, absolutely depends on the site. Sometimes you can tell by where th first number in the row is situated. I tend to assume that the post with the number on is the edge of the pitch, at the start of it and you'd pitch from the number to just before the next number as 'your' pitch.

Having a post slap bang in the middle of the pitch isn't usual, in my experience, but to be honest I tend to ask if it isn't clear.

And generally we try to have pitches with some hedging or bushes rather than an open field type one.

Yes that makes sense, each post is the edge of the site, so pitch post number 15 goes up to the edge of post number 16. I just asked the ranger at the particular camp site in The Netherlands and his reply was the you pitch the tent right at the post. So I still don't know how that particular site works. Mind you in The Netherlands they do not have fast, medium and slow lanes in a pool. They even swim around in circles and across the pool. So who knows?

Damn those pesky Dutch and their refusal to stick to our rules, huh?
We love the freedom over there, our kids certainly enjoyed the playgrounds with chances to take (and judge) risk, without the British over-focus on health and safety. If you didn't take care, you hurt yourself, but you learnt and didn't make the same mistake again.

In Belgium, at a site in Nieupoort they haf vays of making you conform.

]Pitching instruction[/IMG]

They actually came round to ensure that you were parallel to the markings and they measured it.

One Belgian was made to change his setup because the vehicle was on the wrong side, although he conformed inevery other respect

The campsite owner probably worked for the Caravan Club in a previous life!

Sheesh. I'd not get as far as pitching if someone handed me that at a site.

We once pitched in Northumberland and were told exactly how to do it, then the lady at reception said if we were slightly off she would remove out unit. We were two couples and I told her our friends car was blue, it was navy and quite dark, she came to check and insisted it was black. This was a large mixed unit site with plenty of space, it could have been a great site, but getting past reception was not a good start to the weekend. Haven't returned
