We stayed in Volterra at camping le Balze which we reviewed on here. We couldn't pre book and had to just hope they had a pitch free which luckily they did.
We travelled through France with two stops then went over the Alps on the Col de Cenis into Italy. We used Volterra as a base and then visited Pisa, Florence, Lucca, sienna and lots of other places. We went to Rome for a weekend, leaving the van on site and booking a hotel for the night. We left about 5am, in Rome for about 8:30am, left the car in the hotels secure car park whilst we went to explore Rome. After a good nights sleep we then had another day in Rome and we also went to Ostia and then travelled back to the campsite, stopping on the way back for a lovely meal. It was one of the best holidays we have had and will certainly return to Italy in the future.
We were away for 3 weeks.

Thank you for all your advice and suggestions. I really appreciate it.
So, I've booked an overnight in Belgium near Charleroi, then we have 2 nights near Mulhouse in the Alsace before heading through Switzerland (need an overnight stop dependent on route) to Tuscany for a week. We'll use this as a traditional "holiday" to explore the area. Can anyone suggest the best route from Basel to Tuscany? Sites are filling fast and I can't risk just turning up in a 'van with 3 children!
Then I'm on to planning Rome, Pompeii and a return route.
I keep telling my husband I'm going to need blood pressure tablets at the end of all this, and I haven't even left home!
Use Via Michelin to check best routes.
And ... don't forget, you may well need to purchase a vignette to drive in Switzerland, before you enter the country. You can do this on-line ... or near the border on entry.

It's valid for the valid for the December before to the 31 January after so covers the normal holiday return journey (and might even cover another if before the Jan 31st next), and is only required if you use motorways and autostrasses (national roads 1 and 2).
The main .ch link shown first has a map of relevant roads on pdf to download (see bottom of page).
