Hi,

I'll be hiring a camper for a wildlife holiday in June. I see that wild camping has been banned in most of the country and I can't seem to find a site showing free and paid for camping other than the camping card scheme site. We're only there for a week so paying for a month's card seems unnecessary.

I'd be grateful for any updated advice. Also, is it essential to have internet access? Weather apps could be useful.

All advice gratefully received, thanks in advance.

If you only have a week then fly to Iceland and rent your camper van when you get there.

Thanks, I've read through them and some useful information there. The changes came in last year so any info from 2016 will be appreciated.

I've just found a site called visiticeland.com. It's got a map of it says 170 campsites. I'm interested as I cycle toured around Iceland 20 odd years ago and would love to do what you are doing in a camper van some day.

Thanks Sue, that's just what I'm looking for! Google didn't come up with that site when I searched 'camping' but it gives all the information I need including prices.

I hope you get to visit Iceland before it melts.

I put "campsites iceland" into google!

I have just been to find the diary that I kept when we cycle-toured.

It was in July 1996 and I was just 25 with my slightly older husband.I had spent time touring in Europe but 2 weeks in Iceland was a whole different experience. I had been interested in Iceland since a young child, as my dad would show us slides taken during a hiking trip in his teens. Then I read The Wind in My Wheels by Josie Dew with a chapter on Iceland. That was it flight booked from Glasgow.

We camped at Reykavik, Pingvellir, somewhere near to Gullfoss, Hveravellir, Blonduoss, Stadarskali, Varmaland, Borgarnes, Reykavik, Grindavik, and Njardvik.

Saw Geysir, Gullfoss, Blue Lagoon and did the inland Kjolur route, about 500 miles by bike.

Where do you plan to go in the camper. All around? Im most jealous!

Sue

Wow, that sounds like a fantastic experience, I've done 60 mile rides for charity & taken my bike around the Abernethy Forest but nothing like that. You're very adventurous!

We're planning to go to Myvatn and possibly as far as Kópasker in the north east before returning via the Westfjords or Snęfellsnes, both if we get the time. We will probably do whale watching from Husavik & I'm hoping to see Arctic Fox if I stay up all night.

We were going to start around south west Iceland and visit the Blue Lagoon but I've been before and the price is £78 each, a little more than you paid in 1996 no doubt!

Blue Lagoon was £3.50 in 1996! Mind you we did cycle there in the rain from Grindavik. I was never really a cyclist but did spend 3 months cycle camping in Europe a few years before the Iceland trip.

I've just spent a pleasant afternoon looking at all things Iceland. It's my 50th birthday in 2 years and I have been thinking about doing a hiking trek somewhere adventurous. I'm now thinking of a camper in Iceland or maybe a car and hostals. Sure won't be on bike these days.

I have a big birthday coming up next year so I might have to return to see the northern lights. They're not guaranteed but it's got me thinking...
