Hi we are going to France and Germany in August in a camper van 2 adults and we were thinking of booking campsites one day ahead or even on the same day rather than planning a rigid route . Can anyone provide any first hand experience of this or is it better to book in advance because the sites might all be full ?

If you are going post Aug15 then there is no great need to book in France ( don't forget to use ACSI discounts)

Theres no point in booking 1 day ahead. If you are touring just turn up. If you want to book then book them now. As pointed out it gets less busy after mid Aug.

If you want to stop at large coastal sites for a week at a time in first 2wks in Aug then you may need to book but you probably can't book less than a week in peak time & booking odd days is not really feasible as many sites want a booking fee.

Simplest way is just to get in your van & go. Don't book anything.

Avoid the coastal resorts, the honeypots and the places you have heard of - other people will have heard of them too. Germany I don't know, but get off the beaten track in France and you will find small municipal sites with spaces spare in most villages. They won't be in the ACSI guide so take a different one. Phoning ahead might not help as the person in charge may only look in for an hour a day to collect cash. As OS has said, just get in your van and go.
