I am looking for a road atlas to cover the 'Deep South' states. All I can find are foldy up maps or an atlas for the whole of the states. The AA big book is not much good- 1 state per page more or less. Does anyone have an idea of what I might find useful. Needlesstosay, it must have a decent scale - better than 1:1000000

I bought a Rand Mcnally large scale spiral bound road Atlas on Amazon a few years ago.

I don`t know what type of trip you are planning but in 2000 we found that the state `welcome centers` on the interstate as you enter each state gave us maps free of charge. As i`m typing this I seem to remember that it was predominantly the southern states that did that.
If you are going for a long trip you should consider joining AAA as they also used to give free maps and campsite guides. When you finish the trip you can also claim a refund for any unused months of your membership.

I don't know what scale it is but it is quite large and detailed, I used it all the time when I was in the states it was perfectly adequate.

Thanks for all the info. We are going from Orlando through to New Orleans and up the Missippi to Mepmphis Nashville then across to Atlanta for the return home - a month in total. I'd prefer to buy an atlas here and prepare things rather than wait and get an atlas en route

We found it quite difficult to buy maps - ended up with a large scale map - the Southern States, and bought a satnav (GPS in the USA!) This for a trip from Washington DC to New Orleans, along the Atlantic & Gulf coasts. Like others have suggested we picked up maps from tourist agencies along the way. Enjoy your trip, we certainly did!

You are right. Had a look at the Michelin atlas today 1cm to 12kms seems ok   I wish I could find something better though

Just come back from Orlando. Try and avoid the i4 traffic was stupid in and around Orlando itself.

Sound good advice    I should imagine all the Interstates around cities are a nightmare. We crossed Los Angeles last year - Malibu to San Diego   2 hours with no rest areas six lanes and traffic everywhere. Who needs Disneyland? Needlesstosay Florida Disney is off the cards

We have a Delorme Atlas and Gazeteer for Texas that we must have bought in 2008 when we did our first Texas road trip - it also has detailed maps for all of the major cities and we found it invaluable as this was before sat navs became as sophisticated as they are now. It's quite big - A3 size - but that makes it easier to read. I think we must have purchased it over there but worth a look on Amazon? You would obviously need one for each state so could work out expensive but definitely worth it if spending a lot of time in a particular state.
