We have holidayed in the Vendee for the last few years with our touring caravan which we are beginning to outgrow. We are currently thinking of buying a mobile home but struggling to find a site (through google searches) that have a mix of nationalities owning mobiles onsite. My son (12) is quite shy so would need a couple of English speaking friends!

We are finding we don't use the caravan here in Ireland much now due to weather and lack of good campsites. For this reason we feel we would get better use out of a mobile home as I could be down there for 6-8 weeks in summer with the kids (10 & 12).

Does anyone know of any sites in the Vendee (preferably Southern Vendee) that would suit.

We had thought of storing caravan in France and using for extended stays but there are no insurance companies in Southern Ireland that will insure a van stored in France. My concern there is not being covered for public liability (not bothered about the van as it is now 10 years old.

It also needs to accept well behaved springer spaniel as she would be coming with us for the long stay.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may have!

Sorry can't help with the location, although I did look into this myself a few years backs.

The area I looked at was the South Eastern French Med, some of the Static's that I looked at were around 10 to 20 years old, but due to the climate were in tip top condition and I almost bought one for 7k€, the £ was weak against the € at the time.

What put me of though was the annual site service charge of 10k€. I did think of using the Static as a holiday let to subsidise the cost, but that would have proved tricky, as the campsite owner was picky who could do this, I also thought of involving friends and family, but got nowhere with that.

Anyway good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Presumably by "mixed nationalities" you mean English speaking as well as French for your son's benefit. Camping Les Brunelles near Jard sur Mer is a super site for kids. We have seen lots British people there at half term. The site is becoming increasingly filled with static caravans. Whether these are privately owned or just rented out I'm not sure. Also not sure if they accept dogs in high season. I would guess if you are looking to buy a static to put on a site then you would have a better chance on a less popular site.
If this is the case perhaps you would be better contacting French caravan dealers who supply static caravans in the area you are thinking of going to. You can then ask them for site recommendations.

As a matter of interest we stayed at a lovely site for an overnight stop on our way down to Spain this past winter. This is Le Cadoret at Fouras just above Rochefort. It is a municipal site right beside a beach. It has a mix of camping, static caravans and cabins. It is also open all year. We liked it so much that we intend to have a few days there during our summer French holiday.

Thanks Suzac, had found that website and emailed them about exact location of site as since my kids will soon be teenagers I don't want to be too isolated. Waiting for reply. We live in the countryside at home so they would love to be a bit closer to the action in the summer months. Downside is pitch sizes decrease as you get closer to the coast as we all know!

The best idea might be to take your own caravan there this year & stop at a few sites to see how they are. Most large coastal touring sites are gradually filling up with statics so you will have plenty of choice.

The website linked to appears to be some sort of sales platform. I would think it would be best to deal with your chosen site direct. If you indicate your interest in spending money they will find you an English speaker no probs.

Plenty of people that store their older touring caravans in France do not bother with insurance. I wouldn't worry about public liability. It would be French law you would have to check up on anyway. In UK law liability has to proved. Ownership on it's own does not make you liable.

If it's only insurance stopping you then don't let it. If you find a suitable site there will be storage facilities nearby cheaper than UK often only 200€ pa & they tow caravan onto site for you & off at end of stay. Certainly cheaper than buying a mobile home.

Be wary of buying a mobile home as it can prove to be an expensive project. I bought one in the Lot on a park owned by an English family. Worst thing I ever did. I kept it for six years and every year there was some increase or another. I wasn't allowed to sell it myself, it had to go through the owner. I paid £41,000 for the mobile home and I got £10,000 when it was sold. She was making £10,000 a time when she sold on. There was a huge turnover in mobile home owners on there and all fell out with the park owners

Before this, I kept my caravan in France and I'm sorry I did't keep it. I insured it through an insurance broker in Terrasson in the Dordogne. My 'van was stored in the Dordogne and was taken to and removed from Le Paradis. I informed the owner and Le Paradis of the dates and would arrive to find my caravan set up.

Have looked into this and can get storage no problem and delivery to and from site and the caravan would be insured in storage and transit by the storage company. BUT I wouldn't sleep at night knowing my caravan wasn't insured when it is actually on site. What if it went on fire due to an electrical problem in van and a child next door was injured or some other similar scenario? I wouldn't like to be trying to prove to a French court that I wasn't liable. Maybe I overthink things but I'd rather not take any chances...

Insurance does not work like that. Liability has to be proven. If for example John's caravan is burnt out due to a fire in Fred's caravan. John goes then to his own insurer & is paid out by them. The cause of the fire is of no concern of John. He has paid his insurance & will get paid out by his own insurer.

Nobody will able to prove Fred is liable for the fire in his own caravan & will not even try. As I pointed out. Ownership alone does not make an owner liable. Liability has to be proved. If Fred's caravan is not insured then Fred's only loss will be his own caravan. If John is not insured it is pointless suing Fred because John will not be able to prove liability.

If you are that worried then get a permanent pitch for your caravan on a French site. If storage is arranged by them or caravan stays where it is you should be able to arrange insurance through the site.

With nothing better to do I've done a bit of googling for you. Google 'Assurance Responsabilité civile' & use google translate to read or chrome browser does it for you. It does appear you can buy your own personal public liability insurance in France for around 50€ pa.

You can get insurance from a broker in France. I had insurance for my mobile home from a broker in Gourdon, and for my caravan from a broker in Terrasson. You will probably find that the site where you leave your caravan will know of an insurance agent.

I would agree with Opensauce to try some sites first in your own caravan before making your mind up about buying a mobile home. It's a huge outlay and you really need to be sure that the site suits your current (and future) needs as your children grow up.

We currently store our caravan in France - on a site with a mix of nationalities, and the storage cost has just increased to 185 euros PER YEAR! For this they will get it out of storage and put it on a pitch for us, or we can hitch up and drive elsewhere. For our stays on site we pay the nightly fee appropriate to the season, which in low season is just 14 euros per night plus electricity. The site has a heated pool, heated sanitary facilities in low season, a bar and restaurant, a small shop, and access to a river where we can do some canoeing - absolutely an ideal site for us.

Personally I think the storage option is one you ought to look into - that way you can take advantage of a site that you know, or tow your van elsewhere if you want to see other parts of France.

Our insurance is with Towergate, but Opensauce's suggestion of your own public liability insurance is a good one. I personally have no worries about our insurance cover and we have twice claimed on our insurance policy, with no problems whatsoever.

If you want to look at a whole lot of mobile homes for sale, on one website (but at many different campsites) then try the French website Le Bon Coin. I did a search for 'mobil home', 'Vendee' in the Caravanning section and the link above displays the results.

Some are site owned and obviously selling through the site, others are private owners looking to sell. Some are on sites with a short season, but there are others where the site is open all year.
