Having toured through various mountain passes in the Alps, my last 'adventure' was to drive the full length of the A19 east to west through Switzerland. This included negotiating the Furka Pass, which on the map the road was marked in red so thus in my mind a reasonably negotiated route.
My wife did point out that there was a sign advising unsuitable for caravans - I intrepidly pointed out that we weren't with a caravan and headed up the road. There was no mention of passing places where the road was narrow, nor mention of delivery trucks from the other direction not giving way!
As a result of one (very) dodgy moment, I was informed that that was it, no more stupid adventures in our big stupid motorhome (7.5m Adria).
We're going back to the Alps this year (Interlakken) and plan to tour the higher small roads in a hire car. Any advice on using a main 'dealer' like Hertz or a local company instead? Paperwork needed? Costs?

Sorry can't help with the car hire thing, but reading Interlaken brought memories flooding back from 1970, when I was 10 years old, what an amazing region.
I was on a 12 day trip with school at the time, and of course for us kids the most memorable part of the trip was getting the cable car to Piz Gloria (Schilthorn), where the Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was shot.
We hired cars in Spain and Portugal. We didn't need any paperwork except our driving licenses. We did the hiring through whichever campsite we were on at the time but it would have been considerably cheaper if we'd been able to pick the car up from a town or the airport.
Competitive and reliable. Good company to deal with.

Insurance4carhire will sell you an annual Europe Policy for about €40 to cover the add ins that hire cos rip you off for - windscreen damage, underneath car damage, vandalism etc. The annual is often cheaper than a few days policy from the hirers.
Good luck
