Moulin de Paulhiac a few miles south of Castlenaud has water slides - our (now grown up) kids loved them.
If you go there (or Soliel Plage) you can get to the big LeClerc in Sarlat and avoid a shed load of traffic by taking the left off the D703 just through Montfort.

Can recommend Les Peneyrals but like SP it is probably already fully booked for high season, although you could try Canvas and Eurocamp who are there.

La Guyonniere is a great site in St Juliet Des Landes. We've stayed there I think 4 times now for 2 wks, then 3 wks , 3 wks and then for a wk. I think we exhausted the site and surrounding area, however I would still return for a week periodically. You can walk from the site down to Lac du Juanay and there's a nice creperie around the lake too, and an evening festival the first Sunday in August.
Chateaux Apremont , as is Lake Apremont up the road is a nice day out..
The night show at Put Du Fuy is worth going to if you didn't incorporate that.
The beaches and the inland beach at Bretignoles are lovely too.
Nearby villages/beaches also make a new de day out.
We fell into the habit of returning yr after year , but tend to lie leaving somewhere feeling we want more and want to go back!

have to admit we are always drawn to the west med coast, but the more we go the more we vary our route to and from home, that way you will start to find a bunch of new favourites, and in time your favourite site will end end up your longest stopover, depends how long you have, this year we flew to montpellier and had 2 wks at marsellian plage cos the kids didnt want to drive (16 and 18) we have been lucky enough to have 3.5 wks at a time which is great, finding and stopping at new sites most the time, but lac,d'orient is a favourite stopover aswell as millau and vallon

Going back to the 'subject line'. I would say explore. We have regular stop overs which we go back to time and again, because you generally need to meet certain criteria:
1. Campsite with clean facilites
2. Not far from a main route
3. Supermarket
4. Fuel
5. Somewhere that serves food
6. Within a 6 hour drive of the port
So we have Le Chantepie nr Saumur if we're going to to Aquitaine. We stay in Savigny if we're going to the Alps or Provence.
We have pour favourite areas but always open to explore. The only area we were not over keen on was North West, Brittany and the area towards the mouth of the Gironde.
It depends what we want to do. If its a watersport holiday then Le Tedey near Lacanau is a favourite destination. We love the Ardeche, the Pyrenees and across to the Swiss border.
Last year we ventured into unknown camping territory in Italy (we've flown there many times but not camped). This year we're going further...to Siena.
France is too big to stick to one area. It is a fantastic country.

We have a different approach it seems to most, we find each departement has enough to keep us for 1 or 2 weeks, so we tend to pick a new departement and not travel out of it. Each departement usually has a couple of decent towns, so visit 1 per week, maybe 1 or 2 other headline tourist spots, a market or two, then maybe a couple of smaller places (eg villages, chateau, zoos) to go to as well.
So instead of visiting Brittany we have had 3 holidays there - Ille-et-Vilaine (St Malo, Mt St Michel (yes pedants, I know its technically in Normandy), Dinan), Finisterre (Quimper, Concarneau, Benodet, Pont Aven) and Morbihan (Carnac, Vannes, Auray, lots of Menhirs).
Most departements hold our attention for at least a fortnight taking a fairly relaxed attitude - Loire Atlantique, Vendee (x2), Charente-Maritime (x2), Lot, Seine Maritime, Calvados. Sometimes we do join up a couple of neighbouring departements - Allier / Puy De Dome, Loiret / Seine et Marne, Maine et Loire / Indre, Loir et Cher / Indre.

We are post kids now, two grand kids, so we only have ourselves to think of when it comes holidays. So explore, explore.
We also like to get in a big one every other year or so, this year it is Southern Africa. SA, Swaziland, Lesotho and possibly Mozambique, even then we explore, explore, staying in 6 different locations in 4 weeks. We are not ones to stay in one place for too long, we get very itchy feet.
We do, however, have a favourite area for caravaning, coastal Brittany. We have dragged our van all over the place in France, but when the weather is good (we don't do rain either) Brittany takes some beating, with some of the best coastline and beaches in Europe. Love Brittany ❤️
