Is this feasable in 1 day non-towing ( and use ferry as hotel)
alternative is lyon towards tunnel, stop close in hotel and carry onto Cardiff next day

If you had said Caen to Lyon I would have said yes, but I would hate to do that journey if I knew I had to catch a particular ferry. If we are delayed getting to our holiday destination, what the heck, but if I had a ferry to catch, which might cost lots to change, well I couldn't do it.
Each to their own.

We do La Plagne in the Alps to St Quentin via Lyon (outer motorway) regularly in mid-winter. Generally we leave on a Saturday morning around 8.30 and arrive at the B&B Hotel at St Quentin (just south of Arras) by around 4.30. This includes a stop for lunch and to stock up on wine etc at Mr LeClerc at Beaune.
The following day nice easy trip up to the tunnel and onward.
Motorway as far as possible all the way
Ken
Ps just did a quick distance calc.
Lyon to Caen 700km approx
Lyon to Calais 760 km approx but much easier trip

10.00am start for an evening sail? Couple of pit stops en-route? Totally feasible.
We've done the Dordogne to Caen-Ouistreham for the evening sail several times and it's worked well. Much prefer it to Cherbourg. It's a proper overnight so acts as the hotel.
But that crossing might well cost more than a hotel in France plus tunnel and a major hold up could wreck the plan.
Yer pays yer money etc...

My advice is worth no more than the price paid for it
Andy, solo car and on your own, and autoroute all the way.? I reckon about 8 hours driving time and you can have an evening meal and a drink in Ouistreham before you go on the ferry.
