its been a noisy night on the Vendee, thunderstorms, heavy rain etc. this morning my wife went outside to get some milk (from the fridge we have in the posh shed) as she stepped outside, the loudest thunder I've heard for while occurred, it made her jump and scream and even startled me it was so loud and sounded as though it was directly overhead, I think she needs some new underwear ..... lol

We had some amazing thunderstorms in the Vendee on my birthday in August about 5 years ago. They started during the night and carried on all day. I think we were in the middle of about 3 different storms. Trips to the loo became bucket-in-the-tent affairs and we basically stayed inside the tent for the whole day. I didn't even venture out to get the bread until about 3pm. When it seemed to stop at 4pm we headed out to the beach only to get into the water just as it started up again. Whizzed back to the campsite via a super and it stopped finally in time to let me cook my birthday dinner. Never been in a storm like it.
The worst lightning was in Nimes when I am pretty sure it struck the ground about 6 foot from me. Luckily I was in the shelter of a shop doorway. That was very nearly new underwear time.

We've been through two 'mega-storms' .... one in Italy (lakes), where hail stones the size of golf balls (really!) left a lot of dents in the car's roof and bonnet ... and gave the tent a severe battering, whilst it danced like a thing possessed in the high winds ... and secondly, in the Pyrenees (Espot) ...huge lightning strikes all round us during the night ... quite scary not even reaching a count of 'one' from flash to detonation ... saw several blitzed trees in the area the following morning ... but very exciting!!!

In July 2006 (easy to remember because my wife was pregnant with our youngest) we were staying in my parents caravan near Rouen, France. We were there for 2 weeks and it was the first week I think when it was incredibly hot, easily in the 30s C most days so lots of vigorous late afternoon/evening thunderstorms.
The pitch we were on backed onto a forest with a post and 3-wire fence between us and the trees. Well one evening during a particularity heavy thunderstorm I ventured out of the van to check how the awning was holding up to the rain. Just at that there was a terrific flash of light and crack of thunder. I don't know where it hit exactly but it was so close that I actually saw the remnants of the lightning run along the wires of the fence, jumping the gaps at one nearby fence post. I shot back into the van rather quickly.
I spend 3yrs living in Orlando so have seen more than my fair share of severe thunderstorms but never a strike as close as that.

Ours was at Tonnerre of all places.
The police came round alerting everyone that a storm was on its way. It arrived about half an hour later with incredible thunder and lightening , accompanied by gale force winds and hail the size of cricket balls (golf balls are for wimps). All the caravans were pitted from the onslaught and one car had its windscreen smashed. A Penine trailertent was tipped over in the wind.
Luckily we were in a Holtkamper which has flexible guying,so we just shook a bit.
The upside was that the white canvas which had had tree sap and bird poo on it was scrubbed spotless.
We were on a site near Beziers when the heavens exploded. The charging system on our van blew and we had to Heath Robinson a repair. The following morning we found out that a guy was blown 2mtrs by the blast , two trees were down, the patron's house has wires snaking, the gates were blown, the officee computers were blasted and th visa payment unit was still not working 4 days later. We paid our bill a week later by telephone from home. I thought the lightning was closer but not that close. And out of the blue completely - no rain, no storm just two blasts
