Hi, Any suggestions for good campsites on the Loire, west of Angers please?
We've spent a fair bit of time around the Touraine and last year spent a week exploring around the Chatillon/Sancerre area. This time we're planning on starting at Camping De L'Ile Auger in Chinon and fancied travelling west towards the coast.
Preference would be for reasonably quiet, municipal type sites, not holiday parks. By example we loved Camping des Combles on the riverside at Chatillon and the municipal at Chaumont (when it's not too busy).
Look forward to hearing your recommendations.
Thanks.

In that area Nantes is THE place to see - it's so vibrant - and you will laugh when the huge mechanical elephant struts its stuff and sprays the crowd.
The sort of campsite you are asking for is Le Relais des Garennes, at Montbert, 14 miles south of the city. But honestly I would recommend the sort of campsite you don't want - the central city site called Camping de Nantes. It's very modern, very well equipped, and very busy - but so conveniently placed. - and you get discount out of season with an ACSI card.
We spent a week or so at Camping La Promenade at Montjean sur Loire at Easter (see review on here) which we really enjoyed. Not a municipal but very quiet and understated when we were there. Would obviously be much busier in the height of summer though still not a "holiday park".

Hi, remember me from last year.
Hope you have a lovely holiday. One for another year is the municipal site at Joigny which just returned from 9 days there, lovely river/canal location but you your not pitched on it. All pitches are hedged. Town is full of lovely buildings, lots of painting/sketching opportunities.
Hi Debbie,
Lovely to hear from you! We had a smashing time thanks. Looks like you did too, and thanks for the recommendation.
We arrived at Camping Belle Riviere just outside Nantes without a booking only to find it was full; there was apparently an event on and most of the sites near the city were booked out. Nice young lady in the office suggested a couple of places a bit further out, including a municipal site along the river at Oudon, Camping de la Tour.
We really liked it, in spite of it being right next to a very busy railway line. Can't find it on here so I'll add a review when I have more time.
