It is currently 33 deg here in Souillac at almost 8.15 at night.   We and the dogs are melting, as We have been all day. Has anyone Retro fitted air con to a caravan? Is it possible to diy, how hard is it, and is it expensive?

You can fit a unit in what was the Heki rooflight - a friend had his done (and gave us the Heki he was no longer using). Don't know how easy, or how costly, though.

Oh well, I guess that's out for a year or two then . I don't think our caravan is worth any more nowadays! Perhaps when we can afford to replace it... Thank you anyway - helpful as always.

The Dometic units look good, and can be retro fitted under the caravan seats etc, although expensive at around £1000 or so, just for the kit.

Some caravan's come prepped for roof mounted air con units, again expensive at £1000+, with fitting on top.

My thinking would be to buy a free standing air con unit from one of the French supermarkets, cheap as chips at around £400 for a decent one.

Of course they are are aimed for domestic use, but no reason why you could not use one in a caravan.

You also need to consider noise and currant consumption.
Had one on an adjoining pitch a couple of years ago which was on all night. How they slept I will never know!

When I was in France last year the Dutch caravan next to me had one of these units running

Friends of friends last year in Spain rented a portable unit for their.........tent!
It actually worked quite well.
In Spain, and France, there are many companies that rent fridges, microwaves etc. as well as the actual campsites, so perhaps you can rent a unit if you are not moving around too much?

Off topic, but when visiting the Kruger give my son a wave as he works next door as a ranger. BTW his address is in Swaziland where his mom lives.
