So many people have mentioned the Cinque Terre to me...is this doable from Volterra. I imagine it would be best by train and walking...not sure but as we are not so far away it would be a place to explore.

I have looked at the map and can see a route via Viareggio, La Spezia.

Not 100% sure but I feel sure like minded 'explorers' will have been?

Just got back from Cinque Terre on Monday (flying - no camping/caravan involved!).
I would say it is doable for a day trip by driving (early start) to La Spezia. Park there and take either train or boat to Monterosso (the furthest of the 5 villages from La Spezia). Work your way back again using boat or train or walking. Each village is about 5 minutes by train. 10 minutes by boat or an hour on foot.
It is very busy at the moment. Lots of young American students 'doing Europe' and day trippers from cruise ships in La Spezia. I love it there and have been back for the last 5 years but we stay high up in Riomaggiore well away from the madness in the village! It is a stunning place and must have been utterly amazing before the Americans discovered it but certainly worth a visit particularly by boat.
If I can be of any further help please ask!
Rich

I'd recommend taking the boat rather than the train. The villages themselves are very pretty, but it's their setting clinging to the cliffs and hidden in tiny inlets that's so spectacular and can only be appreciated from the sea.

We got a boat from Lerici (across the bay from La Spezia) as we were staying in a camp site nearby. If you get a day ticket (biglietto giornaliero) it allows you to get on and off as you please. We left Lerici at 9.30 and stopped off at each village for a little while,to have a drink or ice cream and soak up the atmosphere. The last village, Monterosso, is larger, almost a seaside resort, so we had lunch there, then got the boat straight back. It was a very relaxing way of doing it. Mind you, it was in early May a few years ago so it wasn't too crowded! The tickets were 25 euros in 2012 but will no doubt be a lot more now.
