We have decided to make a last minute decision to go to France (preferably the Ardeche region) at the start of the summer holidays. This is the only time we can go and I know it is also the French holiday fortnight. We are thinking of not booking and just taking a chance as we are going in our campervan. We have never done this before and I am really worried that we won't get a pitch anywhere. Has anyone ever done this before and if so were they ok?

I would advise turning up early afternoon if you can, don`t leave it till late.
That's the secret, you should be fine. Except on the coast, at an all singing all dancing site. Then you may have to have a second or third choice in mind.

If you go to the Ardeche you won't have to worry about coastal resorts.
If you have your own toilet facilities you can use anywhere on the Aires system and France Passion without having to search out campsites - go with the flow!
Thanks all! I feel a little reassured now! The trouble is that we need to get to a site as my 17 year old son is coming with us and so will need to put up his little tent outside the van so aires might not be suitable. He is a bit tall for the roof bed!
You'll find it easy to find site in the Ardeche - we did the same thing in July last year, without a problem and could have stayed on a choice of sites. I can give you the name of the site we stayed on if you email me at valdaathome at gmail.com. We're here again now and the site is perhaps 20% occupied at the moment. Even the larger sites such as Bastide en Ardeche are relatively empty for this time of year.
Thanks Val,
I will take you up on this. It's nice to feel reassured. I tried looking at a few sites and they were fully booked but as long as we can get in somewhere nice, we'll be happy!

I've been a wimp once, in thirty five years ... booked a site because I wanted a river side emplacement.
Just as well I did, as they were all occupied, when we arrived.
Just back from 4 weeks,Belgium,Luxembourg and France no bookings made, plenty of space and ACSI discount!
Probably go back mid August for another month
