We are travelling down to sort of near La Roche-Sur-Yon (Challans to be more precise) in our caravan and we might need to stop over at an aires after the ferry crossing.

We would need to stop overnight with 2 small children so after recommendations for safe aires to stop if anyone has any suggestions?

On the way home we are humming and thing over what to do but we might stop at an aire to break up the journey home. So somewhere around le Mans and Rouen would also be good.

A lot scaremongering about aires.Everyone knows of some body whose cousin live next door to a person whose nephew was gassed/attacked on an aire.
However if you are in a caravan think campsites. They will have space for children to run around and let off steam, good washing areas and night time security.

Are you too late for a campsite? If not then here are plenty of municipal sites, which are ideal for just an overnight stay, all along the main routes through France.

If you are arriving on a late night ferry then the Aire de la Baie de Somme is one of the safer ones - with a dedicated area for caravans which HGV's aren't able to access. The larger Aires on the autoroute are generally OK - because you are in company with others, but there's no way I would stay at the smaller picnic type Aires. I don't know of any other Aires because we generally don't head west, but south instead.

Yes we will be too late for a campsite sadly, I think it will be about 3am when we get to Calais and then depending on how tired we/the kids are one of us will drive and then stop and then carry on in the morning.

Agree with SGThomas, we've stopped in aires when travelling on the way and back for the last 4-5 years and not had a problem, thinks its more pot luck with this type of stuff, similar to those that have massive issues with the imigrants around Calais whereas others never seem to see them, gut feel says just take the same precautions you would at home, i.e keep windows shut, lock you door etc.

At 3am. withtwo young children I would drive half an hour out of Calais and pull into the big Auchan hypermarket car park at Boulogne (junction 31 of the autoroute and turn towards St Omer) . If it's a Sunday morning the store will be closed and you can sleep on. And it might then take me more than a single day to get to Challans from there. How far is it? 400 miles?

If you're arriving in France at 3am it'll be getting daylight by the time you reach Rouen or Le Mans - better taking Berriow's advice or if you really want an aire then Baie de Somme on the A16 a few miles north of Abbeville has a separate area for caravans in a pleasant area away from the main services,

Just use your eyes. If it looks a dodgy area it probably is. No such thing as a safe or unsafe motorway services which I take it is the type of aire to which you refer. As pointed out my free overnight stop of choice is a supermarket carpark in a small town. From Calais only 10mins turn of A16 at Marquaise exit. Park at back of Intermarche or Aldi carpark. You can get yourself some food in the morning.

great thanks everyone for the advice :) I'm hoping we can power through and between us drive all night while the children sleep but I like to have a contingency plan! I hadn't considered that it would be getting light!

Berriow yes it's just over 400 miles. We normally travel to St Tropez with them so they are used to the long car journeys, we obviously make lots of stops. On the way back we are planning 2/3 stops and were thinking about doing day tips and then staying in aires / municipals over night to save some cash.

I've done the power through option before and even if you forget the safety implications of driving that long while towing, personally think it just ruins the first couple of days of the holiday because of how tired/grumpy I get!
